Interesting. I thought triple-layer HD DVD was almost dead, but apparently not.
TL51 (triple-layer 51 GB) HD DVD has now been under study by the DVD Forum. This never happened with TL45.
So far, this is the only information that is available. We have no information as to whether or not increased bandwidth is being discussed, or if current machines (with a firmware upgrade) could possibly support it.

Cool, if you're lucky it will come out along with G5 PowerBooks.

Seriously.
Except Disney is probably going to publish movies in both in the coming months.
In an interesting turn, Disney seems to be considering to release HD video titles on the HD DVD format, changing its original plans to only support the rival Blu-ray format.
According to an article published by Variety.com, Bob Iger, Disney's CEO, dropped a hint that Disney may end up playing both sides in the high-definition DVD format war, during the firm's annual meeting with shareholders. In response to a shareholder question, Iger said company continues to back Sony's Blu-Ray format, but added, "We probably will publish in both formats."

I'm just waiting for one of the formats to implode. I don't have either HD-DVD or Blu-ray, but I would be more inclined to go with Blu-ray for some reason.
I'm starting to not like Sony, but many novice users see them as "good" quality. Nothing special, but usually not junk.
I think once drive prices become ubiquitous, HD-DVD is going to be a bit of a hard sell with the IT people.

Les Annees Laser (print mag) is reporting in their April issue that Samsung will release a universal player in July 2007.
Samsung BD-UP5000
Blu-ray and HD DVD support
HDi support on HD DVD <-- The LG player doesn't support HDi.
BD-J support on Blu-ray
1080p24 output capability on Blu-ray
HDMI 1.3, with support of all the advanced audio codecs

That might be the player for me. My one regret with going with a Samsung tv was that Samsung was in the Bluray camp. Looks like that's not longer the case. I hope it's not $$$ like the LG player is, but likely it will be just as expensive. I don't care much about the HDMI 1.3 (My tv is a 1.2 set anyway, and 1.3 is only a must have on a audio receiver), but HDi support is very important to me. The Blu-ray is more of a bonus really. On Bluray/HD-DVD dual releases I'd probably still go for the HD-DVD release. It would be better to go with HD-DVD disks for if I ever got a second player/drive.
As for the Samsung brand being important, I like having matching gear, one source for support, and most importantly, one remote.

Well, Samsung's first Blu-ray player was buggy, although I do think they fixed most of the problems after a few months. I just hope the Samsung universal player turns out not to be vapourware, and is a good product at a reasonable price. The LG at $1200 for crippled functionality certainly doesn't impress.
P.S. I use a Logitech Harmony universal remote for all my equipment, from various brands.

Yeah, I didn't notice that -- just saw the "March" dateline and even then thought about commenting that it was slightly old news . I can't say I put a lot of stock in that.

Yeah... speaking of really expensive things...
I haven't honestly been impressed by the Harmonies (a friend has two). The LCD is nice, but aside from that, they're kinda more of a pain to navigate. Meantime I actually happy with the remote that came with my TV.

"Universal at one time was going to release up towards 90% of their '07 HD DVD titles on the hybrid discs - one side standard DVD and one side HD DVD. For some unknown reason however, the studio has discontinued current hybrid discs and re-spec'd future disc for HD DVD only. "
Damn. I remember how dual disks was supposed to be a big plus and selling point for HD-DVD. Guess not.

Producing combo discs for catalog releases always seemed like a stupid idea to me. DVD is so prevalent that the studios could assume anyone buying a hi-def catalog title already owns the DVD. I didn't mind paying a few extra bucks for "Superman Returns" on HD DVD, but I would have thought a bit harder about spending extra for titles like "V for Vendetta" and "Batman Begins" when I already had the DVD.
Combo would have been a great idea if the price had been the same.

Well, if all you have is the TV and a player or something like that, then you're right.
However, my remote controls:
Toshiba HDTV
Scientific Atlanta PVR
Kenwood Receiver
Panasonic DVD Player
Philips DVD Player (all region)
Microsoft Xbox 360 and HD DVD drive
Zektor component video and digital audio switcher
Furthermore, the remote is programmable over the internet (via USB), and I didn't have to type in any of the IR codes. Everything is already online in a central database (including even for the Zektor). I did make some minor changes to the button assignments, but it was a snap since I just need a web browser to access the site. All the functions are listed in drop down lists.
My remote goes for less than ~US$70 on Froogle (although I paid $85).
The colour Logitech 880 is ~US$160 on Froogle (although analogue SPRINKLES paid less). (I actually prefer the design of mine over the 880, but the 880 has a bigger and colour screen, more buttons, and bigger buttons.)
Now, if you prefer the Samsung player then that's great it matches your TV. However, it seems odd to me to specifically get the Samsung because it matches your TV and remote. Samsung may turn out to be the best in its category and reasonably priced, but then again it might not.
My guess is that the Samsung will be cheaper and better than the LG, but it will still be outrageously priced by most standards.

I can tell you right now that ALL previous samsung up-converting DVD players have had some really poor picture quality according to AVS forums. They all had white or black crush and the Samsung BR player had the chip set wrong so all movies looked blurry.
Samsung is not the best with quality that is for sure.

It's not completely that. I would be more than willing to buy a non Samsung HD-DVD player. But if it came down to the Samsung vs. the L.G. vs. the other high end players, I'd give the Samsung an edge (if it didn't have one already) for going with my TV.
If having a matching player for my TV was all that important to me, I wouldn't have bought a Samsung TV, or I wouldn't be in the Bluray camp.

Confirmed: Samsung Blu-ray/HD DVD hybrid:
During an exclusive event Samsung invited us to late February, it unveiled the future hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD player which will launch in July: the BD-UP5000. Cosmetically it is very similar to the BD-P1200, the single-format Blu-ray player which will come out in April in the US. This "Duo HD Player", as the CE maker calls it, will be 100 percent operational as regards interactivity, both on Blu-ray (BD-J) as on HD DVD (HDi). It will have an HDMI 1.3 output and it will support all the new audio formats. It will also be possible to setup the HDMI output at 1080/24p, but only for Blu-ray. "It's because this option is not standardised on HD DVD yet", was the explanation. For DVD upscaling (to 720p, 1080i or 1080p), Samsung has chosen DCDi processing (as opposed to HQV on the BD-P1200) for "cost reasons". No final price has been disclosed, but Samsung is looking at a 10 percent price differential over the single-format Blu-ray players. In other news, the European launch of the BD-P1200 has been delayed without a date.
Dr. Shin, the father of the BD-UP5000, holds the 3-laser-diode drive specially designed for this player.

Nice.
A Samung Uni this summer? Bye bye LG.
I wonder if Onkyo is going to Uni route our will they do HD DVD only? I say that because they are proponents of universal DVD-A/SACD/DVD players.

Question, if the news came out in Feb why are we just hearing about it now?

BTW, the HD-DVD addon for the 360 appears to be on sale at Sams Club - techbargains.com is saying it's $130.99 at some stores! I'm gonna run by the one near me after work and see if it's true. Could be a great deal if it is true.
Hell, maybe I'll buy a couple and ebay 'em.

Dunno, but it sounds like it was private and exclusive showing to the print mags and friends. If it was a showing in late Feb., that'd be too late for the March issues.

D'Oh! (on both counts).
P.S. I just ordered this series: BBC Planet Earth: The Complete Series
I'm really looking forward to it. 11 hours of HD goodness.
BTW, to my surprise, it's number 1 at Amazon right now on both the HD DVD and Blu-ray charts.

LOL:
-- The BDA has formally kicked off a new PR campaign called "Phase Hydra"....its purpose is to seed "high profile" forums with Blu-ray advocates and target bloggers to promote Blu-ray to get the word out to the world...the campaign will also focus on "smaller, independent studio issues"...
Confirmed by a Sony Pictures employee:
I think someone in the BD PR group made an interesting choice in giving a dramatic name to what amounts to standard PR/marketing activities. Would this even be a topic of discussion if it had not been given a name appropriate for a Godzilla sequel?

Blu-ray is winning. They have the most studio and hardware support, the most popular titles and the PS3 is a relatively cheap and capable Blu-ray player. In fact, I bought a 60GB PS3 last night along with 3 blue-ray titles.
I'm going to pick up Casino Royale today.
Has anyone seen any HD-DVD ads anywhere lately? Can you buy any HD-DVD players for under 900 CAD?
PS. Is this dual/triple layer thing going to suffer from the pregnant pause problem we saw on Dual layer DVDs? If so, that is another advantage for the higher capacity Blu-ray.

Ok, I see there is a Toshiba for 499.99 CAD. After my experience with my upscaling Toshibia DVD player, I'm not touching another Toshiba again.
Why are mac users buying XBox 360s and HD-DVD players when the former is a MSFT product and the latter is a standard supported by MSFT. Blu-ray is supported by Apple, it supports AVC (H264) video and the PS3 supports ACC.

I see them in the same places I see Bluray ads. "Some movie name here! Available some date on DVD and Bluray."

Apple is a member of both the Bluray and the HD-DVD associations. In the format war, they are currently neutral. In fact, DVD Studio Pro can create HD-DVD's but not Bluray discs right now.
I know plenty of Apple employees with XBox 360's. Apple has nothing against the XBox or HD-DVD.
HD-DVD also does H264, and Bluray also does Microsoft's VC1 codec. When you buy Bluray you still pay licensing to Microsoft. No advantage there.

Blu-ray is winning because you bought a PS3 with 3 blu-ray titles? Not to bash you or Blu-ray (I own a Blu-ray player myself too) but you shouldn't jump to conclusion just yet.
As of right now HD-DVD and Blu-ray are virtually identical except for few small/big titles.

Yeah according to the charts on the page listed in the second post on this thread it almost looks like HDDVD is starting to catch back up.

Not to bash bash me? Isn't that like saying "no offense" and then insulting someone anyway? Why do you care? I'm just expressing my opinion. You will notice that I'm not an "early" adopter. I took a look at the early HD-DVD players and they looked heavy and clunky not to mention that they were over a grand when then came out.
My reason for buying a PS3 is based on my research into both formats and seeing Blu-ray as having the most interesting exclusives and most interesting titles overall. The HD-DVD players still look chunky like an old VCR compared with the PS3 and I get a Next Gen Console with the deal if I chose to play some games.
I could have bought an XBOX 360 but then I would be supporting MSFT financially and I would have to buy a clunky add-on if I wanted HD-DVD support. Taking the Price of an HDMI capable XBox 360 elite and the HD-DVD addon, I would have ended up spending more and had an awkward setup with the additional drive hanging off.
Those are my reasons, if someone does not like it, tough.

Let's see, the top selling High Def title was Casino Royal for BR and the top selling HD-DVD movie had compatibility problems with the HD-DVD add-on drive for the XBox-360.
I would rather not need with compatibility headaches.

You're pretty oversensitive there dude.... he actually didn't bash you... he just said that "you shouldn't jump to conclusion just yet." Geez.

aristoties, you are all over the place. You don't realize that I buy HD movies for both formats so arguing against me is like arguing against yourself. I called you out on BS info and you dodged my point. Neither format are winning at this time with no clear prediction on which format will take over so don't try to fool yourself or anyone else.
And the compatibility issue? Blu-ray have them too especially BRJ. I don't get your point.

Congratulations. You have money to spare to either buy two players or a player that plays both.
Both are doing well but it appears that Blu-ray has more studio support. How am I all over the place? I thought I was just expressing my thoughts on the matter and explaining why I went for blu-ray.

Uh, no. HD-DVD came out what, a year ago? The first players were clunky and expensive and it seemed that HD-DVD would have a head start but it stalled. Blu-ray took a while to come out but now not only caught up but exceeded availability of players and content.
I waited for the prices to come down and for more content to come out for both formats and for reviews of both Blu-ray and the second wave of HD-DVD players to come out before picking one.
My decision did not just come down to what was available commercially but also what support there was for each format for authoring and playback on the mac. It appears that at least home authored Blu-ray will play with a blu-ray burner and the Apple DVD Player and Toast Titanium 8 appears to have acceptable Blu-ray authoring features.
The ability to author High Def media on the mac is a major reason for going with blu-ray as I will be able to author my HDDV home movie projects in full resolution onto a Disc. So far, there is no authoring support or burner drives for the mac that support HD-DVD. As some of you have pointed out, there is plenty of content out there for both formats but content != authoring.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about the authoring situation.

I don't understand what you are talking about. I'm presenting reasons why I chose one format. So far, I have not said "OMG HD-DVD suxors!!!!!". Having content to play back is great but what about sharing your own HD movies? How do you do that with HD-DVD without burners and authoring software readily available?

Are there mac compatible HD-DVD burners and software?

Doesn't matter how long something has been out, if you're buying it when it has less than 1% of the marketshare of the previous product, you're an early adopter.

Damn, I loved that comment. So insightful and to the point of my post. Why did you bother quoting all of it if you had no intention of responding to any of it?
