So, how does one go about canceling Verizon, and making sure you can keep your number? how does that whole process work? What does it cost?

I really wouldn't bother breaking your contract. It will cost at least $250 to do so.

Verizon pretty much kills you for killing a contract. Don't do it.

it is called "number portability". that, doesn't cost anything.
ending your cell phone contract on the other hand (no matter who it is) is costly.

1. Fake your own death
2. Have yourself declared dead
3. Have your family cancel your contract on the fact that you are dead
4. Turn up a few weeks later and start an account with Cingular

Can you downgrade your service? Instead of 1000 minutes change it to 200 minutes?

When I checked a couple of days ago, Verizon's lowest plan was 450 minutes, but if you have a contract, they won't switch.

Oh, and they definitely do let you change if you have a contract. I've done it multiple times. They just require that you agree to a contract extension if you do.

I should have clarified that; you're correct, but the reason I didn't is because I'm getting an iPhone when they hit the streets, so I didn't want to renew.

Gotcha.
Personally, I'm going to wait. My fiance and I recently put both our Verizon phones on a single family plan, so our contract is for another year and a half or so, which is one reason. Also, I hate Cingular, and by the time our contract is up, it won't be that much longer until Cingular's exclusive deal with Apple for the iPhone is up as well, that's another reason. Also, I'm not convinced that I'm going to want the first gen iPhone, I'd rather wait until they release one that can use 3G networks rather than only getting internet through WiFi (ideally a CDMA version that uses EV-DO v2), that's another reason. Also, I'm not convinced that the soft keyboard that iPhone has will really be good enough for emailing and texting, so I want to try that out first before deciding if I want to get an iPhone over something with a physical QWERTY keyboard, another reson. Also, I have no particular desire for a phone that plays music and I'm betting that it won't be long before we start seeing serious competitors to the iPhone, some of which might suit my needs and desires better, which is the last reason.

Hey, I just read this post from another forum:
-----start------
When I did my research a few months ago, a lot of people were being
canceled from Verizon. It seemed like anyone who traveled much or used
much data, were being canceled. Not profitable enough customer or
something. Do you use it much like for business, downloading,
uploading or have you heard of this issue? I wound up going with
Sprint and have been happy.
----finish------
So, if other people are being canceled for roaming or using alot of data on their [maybe unlimited] data plan, maybe you can sign up for the data plan and use it to the point that they cancel you.
Just don't sign up for another 2 years to start the data plan.

I think its a little premature and to be honest foolish to cancel your current contract for cingular. I actually just signed up for verizon a month ago.
I figured I did not want to pay such a high premium for a first generation phone. Looks cool but who knows what bugs exist.
Second being so new you are paying a premium. Anybody remember how much the moto razor was going for when it first came out - two or three hundred dollars, now it can be had for 50 bucks.
Third odds are that you'll end up paying the termination fee, and that increases the cost of the iphone, that is your out of pocket expense for get an iphone includes the termination fee.

What's the deal with Verizon? I called someone that had verizon and it's as if they really didn't have a direct connect cell phone. Even though he wasn't on the phone, I had to go through some kind of connecting service. When he was on the phone, it was even worse.
Is Verizon a cell phone company or what? It was weired.

It was just an attempt to be silly. Apparently, it was not very successful.
Anyway, I'd recommend just waiting the contract out. Cell phone companies are notorious for making you pay through the nose if you break contracts.

That is weird, no verizon wireless works just like any other cell phone carriers. I've was tired with dropped lines and poor quality from cingular. While the iphone was (still is) a temptation, I could not justify spending that kind of dough on a cell phone (even though it's much more then just a phone).

All of what you guys are saying is very true. I was trying to do a pro/con, and the idea of high costs plus first generation is enough to keep me waiting.
