Okay so now that the apple TV has been unveiled and all the info is out I was wondering if someone was feeling ballsy enough to open their apple TV and take the hard drive out and put it in a intel based mac and try and install osx on it. Then stuff it back in the apple TV and see if it boots?

what you will need:
-apple TV
-Intel based Mac with Laptop IDE functionality
-Knowledge of computer repair

If anyone wants to give this a go and then post their results please do. I am still debating about getting one but I know I would be unable to return it if I had tried to tamper with it.

Won't work. OS X requires SSE3, and the Apple TV doesn't have that. That's just the first thing off the top of my head.

Neat. This would be good as I travel a bit, and it would be nice to take the Apple TV where I go.

I'm pretty sure he meant it was neat that the hard drive could be upgraded, so that he could switch it out and THEN take the AppleTV where he wants it to go.

Kind of. I can't speak specifically to the quality of the iPod composite video output since I don't own an iPod video, but I can tell you with certainty that on a decent sized HDTV analog composite video (yellow RCA jack) isn't going to come close to the digital output of HDMI.

Another thing I can tell you with certainty is that I'm LOVING my AppleTV. I have it connected to my Samsung 46 inch DLP and I've been watching tons of video podcasts (videocasts?). GeekBrief.tv, DL.tv, MacBreak, Cranky Geeks, teXtra, Diggnation, David Pogue, etc. It is like having my own custom TV station.

Watching these with the AppleTV means I don't have to dedicate my laptop (or any computer) to the cause.

Next up is ripping my almost 3 year old son's DVD collection to his dual G4 then connecting his iTunes to the AppleTV. Kid's TV On-Demand.

One wish... give me the ability to play my video podcasts randomly... wait! Smart Playlist? back in a minute! ;-)

[edit] That doesn't work in case you wanted to know. The AppleTV makes playlists a part of the Music category, and doesn't provide access to them from within Podcasts [/edit]

There's probably little chance of that ever happening, who other than you and maybe 5 people would want to watch podcasts randomly.

I don't even know why you'd want that lol tv's not random either, why random video podcasts?
