So... just out of curiosity, why does everyone think that the G5 will be from Motorola? Think about this...

The original "G3" was from IBM. It was marketing name given to the chip by Apple since the PowerPC since IBM Power PC 750x doesn't ring like Pentium III.

Anyway, the same thing happened with the G4, except this time it was Motorola's chip and it included Altivec (which has it's own marking name coincidentally... the "Velocity Engine"). So the Motorola Power PC 7450 with Altivec becomes simply "G4".

Now, given that Motorola hasn't been doing much in the way of helping Apple out, why couldn't Apple take the PowerPC 970 and market it as the "G5"?

Thoughts?

The reason for this is that the next big motorola processor has been dubbed the G5 by rumors sites. Then, the PowerPC 970 was announced. It is likely that apple will call the 970 a G5. However, prior to this, there was no IBM competitor to the Motorola "G5." At this point, Apple would be crazy to call the Moto processor a G5 just to turn around and call the 970 a G6. However, they may both be called a G5... that is if the Motorola processor is ever released. January was the expected timeframe. we'll see it all as the apple turns.

I think the moto G5 expected chip is only for the embeded markets... hence won't be seen in a Mac ever... yes the PPC 970 will suceed the G4... but I kinda hope they drop the G because it's gotten abit old... and it's a lot less comparable to a G4 than the G4 was to the G3.

We could have 2 G5, named to reflect their end use : G5 Mobility and G5 Pro for example.

But I think I would prefer a new name created by Apple for the 970, like AMD did with their Hammer. Apple is good at marketing things : they should come with a nice name (Sabertooth, Claw etc to go with the felines).
Sure IBM will call it something like NW97002XF but I hope they will accept Apple proposal

The 970 should be called the G4, too bad that name is already taken. The naming scheme went as such (in my head):

680x0: 1st generation
PPC60x: 2nd generation
PPC7xxx: 3rd generation

Granted, for anything AltiVec-enabled, the G4 trounces the G3, but it really is just "G3 with MMX(tm)", not a 4th generation chip. Oh well, maybe Apple will go buck-wild and call the PPC970 the "G64", or maybe they'll make a typo and call it the "C64". I only pray that they don't call it CPU eXtreme.

You realize the 68k line of processors had NOTHING at all to do with the PowerPC chips right?

The generation scheme went a little more like this:

601::G1
603/4::G2
740/50::G3
7400::G4

Between the release of the G3 and G4 (MPPC750 and MPPC7400 respectively) Motorola changed their chip numbering scheme a little bit. The first number is the target market (7 being host independent host processors), the second number is the chip generation, and the last two numbers are individual revisions within the generation. The G4 was a little bit more than the G3 with an Altivec unit strapped on the back, it uses a FPU akin to the one used in the 604e which went on to be the basis for several generations of IBM produced processors (used by IBM in their AIX workstations and servers).

I really doubt Motorola is ever going to release a BookE independent host processor, they are becoming less and less interested in the relatively limited PPC desktop market. Motorola stands to make much more money focusing instead on embedded chips because there they don't have to try to keep up with the Athlon and Pentium4 in terms of clock speed and raw processing power.
