I see this often enough on the east coast that I'm wondering whether you guys see this in other parts of the country or in other countries.
I just don't get why people hang a stethoscope from their rear view mirror. To gain sympathy from a cop if they are pulled over? To impress other drivers? Fashion statement?

Without context, this strikes me as something a med student would do.

I drive by a few hospitals on the way to work but haven't noticed it here in Atlanta.

I see employee badges on lanyards, and all sorts of other crap hanging there. Often these badges are for "restricted access" areas or otherwise useful for gaining unauthorized access to places, but the employees seem to not care... All the stethoscope users I know keep their scopes handy, on their persons usually. If you buy a good stethoscope (you can put $200 into one very easily), why would you leave it to bake in the sun in your car? Dumb.

Or in the cold where the tubing can freeze and crack.
