I wish they made just one of the newer Westernized Godzillas friendly.

OK, that looks like one I need to see. I tried to watch the Matthew Broderick version, and I just couldn't get into it. Hopefully this one will be as good as the teaser is.

To some folks there is only one Godzilla, but I'll see this one no problem.

I actually like that movie (its the only Godzilla movie i've seen). I thought it was a real fun action movie.

Find and watch the original 1954 film with Raymond Burr. There are actually two different versions of the original; the one with Burr was edited and has him added in, and was an international hit.
Aside from the style of 1954 films, it sets the structure for "Japanese Giant Monster Movies." It's also darker than any of the others, with stern warnings about the use of nuclear weapons having unexpected consequences.
The 1998 film with Broderick did several things to the format; they changed the monster drastically, and they gave what I thought was an inappropriate level of exposition in the buildup to actually seeing the monster. It added up to what felt to me like a none-too-nice lampoon of the originals. I didn't dislike the acting, the effects, etc., I just couldn't get into the movie because it wasn't a "Godzilla movie".

Same here, but I never understood why she went to New York instead of trashing one of the large cities in South or Middle America.

Nooooooooooo!!!
Please watch the original Toho Studios version, without Raymond Burr. It's so much better. The Burr version loses a lot of the sub-plots and details that make the original more than a simple monster movie. Criterion has a fantastic restored version available (which also includes the Burr version, if you feel you must see it, too)
As for this new version...I dunno. There's nothing in that trailer that makes it a must-see for me. It just looks like yet another CGI wreck-everything-in-sight extravaganza.

Absolutely agree on the Toho studios version- it's a different movie that actually raises the bar for this genre. The Raymond Burr version is laughable after you watch the real deal!

Completely AGREE! The Burr addition was a clumsy afterthought. Get the cleaned up, enhanced version from Criterion!

The original is available? I didn't know that! Definitely go with that one. The earliest version available that I was aware of was the Burr version, which does a fairly good job at setting the mold for the genre, but if the original original is out there, get that! Lacking the Westernization applied to the Burr version, the original is quite striking - and kind of scary, even today.

When you get your hands on it you'll be pleasantly surprised. I loved the Burr version for years - then I finally saw the real deal:
Amazon.com: Godzilla (The Criterion Collection): Takashi Shimura, Akira Takarada, Ishiro Honda: Movies & TV
