I take it back. Apparently they pop up on the map.

...according to some guy: Looking for Vendettas (PSN) - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Wikia (about 15 posts down)

If you have used intel to locate a captain, it will show the zone he is in UNLESS he is involved in a quest. If he is, it shows the marker for the quest. Those quests are usually the captain doing something to increase his power, which you're supposed to stop.

Any Orc can locate any captain (just grab them and interrogate). If you grab a captain (have to get their energy down to about a third first) or a worm (someone with a green rhombus over their head) you can also get their strengths and weaknesses. You can also get intel from slaves you rescue or documents you find.

The way to find a captain that is not a target of a quest is to go to the zone, find a high building and go to wraith mode (left bumper). This shows all orcs nearby as ghosts, with the captains in red and the worms in green. They also tend to show up in the same areas all the time. For easy kills, find the ones with weaknesses to stealth or ranged attacks. Also make use of their fears and the games' WMD: explosions from fire or grog (just shoot it with an arrow), Caragors and those wasp nests. You're immune to all of those except the Caragors.

That's a designed lock to force you to start killing captains at this point and not just run through the quests. I had the same situation.

Ok, but enough captains and main quests. That's what gets you get power points, which unlocks the next tier.

Yesterday's update got photomode.

I didn't get to play online because when I got home, I spent 30 min reading and then fired up the PS4 and saw a 20 minute download waiting. God dammit. Maybe I will revenge tonight.

At least no deaths last night and I killed one more orc captain, and did a few side missions. I really need to progress the story.

Perfect.

This game is truly gruesome. It's strange how the black blood makes things seem tamer than they are.

As soon as I had access to Tier 2, I spent my 6 points and had it finished already (minus mission skills).

So, apparently dying during the challenges (or rampages, as I see them) counts as an in-game death. That is horseshit design.

Booted up Saturday, went across the map to do a challenge (accidentally stealth killing the weakest captain I've ever seen along the way), die during the challenge, watch the captains level-up screen. Turn off PS4.

There's one dagger challenge that I cannot complete. I've probably tried twenty times so far. It's my white whale.
