Good name for a band, no?

But what do you guys think about this whole robbery thing that Ryan Lochte and others are claiming? The Brazilian govt has the other swimmer's passports so they can't leave, though Ryan already left the country. Apparently the Brazilian Police think the whole story was made up, so now they're making a big deal of it.

Personally, I believe neither the swimmers nor the Brazilians, but think the whole thing is being blown out of proportion - this is how wars start! lol

The NYT has a story on it http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/19/sp...=top-news&_r=0

(curiously enough, the comment section is decidedly anti-American and claims white-male privilege, but whatever, it's the NY Times.

Here's BBC for somewhat unbiased reporting.:

Apparently there is security video footage of Lochte and his cohorts ... all of whom were apparently intoxicated ... vandalizing a gas station and fighting with the security guard. It would appear the whole "robbery" story was a complete fabrication.

That video shows guys walking out of a door, nothing that indicates drunk behavior or fighting with anyone nor incurring vandalism.
In fact, it's quite boring - no action!

I think the key takeaway is that it's clear that there was no armed robbery.

When I was mugged in LA it took a total of 15 seconds. In fact, it took much longer to find a phone and call the cops afterward. (My empty wallet was found but that's it.)

What is it with American (male) swimmers? Are they all assholes?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Well, if the security guards held the swimmers against their will and demanded payment with their guns out - whether pointing at the swimmers or waving the weapon around as a threat - I think this would indicate a robbery. Even if the swim team damaged a door or whatever, this seems a bit excessive and outside the rule of law - but perhaps this is the way the law works in Rio.

I want to believe the Lochte story, but I also don't want to believe that a nasty cliche/stereotype has reared its head.

the plot thickens....

I think it's the jock mentality in general.
