You should also run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your computer. It may give faster results than memtest, and if it does, it will tell you which module/socket is bad. Your help is really appreciated Detrius, thank you. I ran memtest in single user mode 3-4 years ago when I installed this ram. It's entirely possible that some of it (non-name brand) has gone bad in that time.

Title: Quartz killed the Tiger.

I had my first Tiger crash. I was viewing a qtz file from Quartzcomposer.com when QuickTime Player—and then the rest of the system—stopped responding. After the spinning ball of death finally went away several minutes later, the system was still locked up (mouse moved, but nothing else responded) and I opted to to restart rather than wait and see if/when it would recover.

I'm guessing this was only possible because Quartz is using the video hardware? Otherwise I should have been able to force quit QT Player.

I've got an external Firewire hard drive that has never given me problems with my iMac G3 600 (10.3.x). Now I have an iMac G5 (Rev B). If it's been running for several days, it will kernel panic on restart if the external Firewire hard drive is connected and running.

I've run memtest and the stock RAM checks out fine. AHT says everything is okay. Disk tests check out fine. Either there is a problem with the Firewire drivers in Tiger or something is wrong with the Firewire port or controller. There are some strange Console log entries but I talked to Apple tech support and they said not to worry about them.

Any ideas why a mounted Firewire hard drive is causing kernel panics with this machine but not my old one?

There is no panic.log anywhere on my system. I don't think it's being created because the kernel panic occurs after I select "Restart."

I'm experiencing a freeze/failure to boot on a PB G4/867 12". It goes like this:

* ~70% of the time when I wake my PB from sleep, it fails to "connect" properly to the wireless network. It sees it, joins it, but will not allow me to connect to the internet. It does not matter what network this is. I came up with a workaround: set up a blank "dummy" network and tell the PB to connect to it. When it fails, I select the proper network. This has worked more or less fine for ages, and when it didn't a reboot solved the problem.
* Now, when this happens and I reboot, I get an endless spinning progress bar. I have to book into single-user mode and run fsck -y to get it to boot back up.
* If I run Applejack to repair everything and fix permissions/caches, I get this error popping up even while AJ is still running: Limiting closed port RST response from 251 to 250 packets per second. There's also something about lookupd shutting down unexpectedly in there. I don't have a screenshot.
* None of this shows up in the panic/crash logs or in the console.

There are others on the Apple forums experiencing this problem. Has anyone seen it/fixed it here?

To which I should add: in the network prefs under airport, for the option "By default, join," I no longer have an option for "automatic." I only have an option for "A specific network."

What OS are you running? Have you run DiskWarrior? What version of the Airport software are you using? Do you have the same problem when booted from a clean copy of the OS?

I have a G4 Mirrored, Dual 1.42, w 2gb ram

When Upgraded to tiger (any mini version) I'm not able to finish a shutdown or restart. I've installed clean, and over my 10.3.9 with the same results. I have removed my third party hardware (USB 2 card and extra firewire card), I have run OnyX, TechToolPro, Disk Util, Apple hardware test (although not the repeated extended version) and nothing has made a dent in it. I'm about to restart(force shutdown with power button) and try the open firmware thing.

Is there a particular log file I can look into, or cache or preference I can delete? Other than this the system is stable and fine, just can't get it to finish a shutdown routine.

Alright, panic has set in...apologies if this is the wrong place. I've got an iBook G4 running 10.3. Here's my problem:

9 times out of 10 it boots up correctly. That one time, what happens is I press the power button, hear the chime, and it seems like it's booting up fine - but then, it's like the screen is dark. For all I know, I'm getting the whole welcome message and everything, but I can't see it. I try the brightness setting and yes, it's all the way up - but nothing. I try pressing the keys - like control Q, esc, anything - and it gives me the little sound when that option's not available. It's like the lights are on, but nobody's home... just tried command v, but can't even get anything there yet...

Is this the dreaded kernel panic I keep reading about? it's not a crash, but I don't know what it is. Firefox has been crashing a lot lately...

Well, I had Panther for what a year, and what cats before that and I can't remember the last crash I had before Tiger. I've now had Tiger what two months and have had 3 freezes resulting in a hard reboot. I have not rebooted like that in nearly 2 years.

Tiger has some serious issues and I look forward to getting back to being crash free.

I traced a kernal panic at startup to my airport express card in my iMac. I removed the card, the computer started up and worked fine. Bad airport express card, right? I ordered a new one from Apple. It arrived today. I installed it, booted up, and wham -- kernal panic at startup.

Now what?

Probably a bad socket, which means you need a new logic board. Sorry. There's technically the possibility that the second card was bad too, but it's not likely.

Hard freezes are virtually always a hardware problem ( 99.99% of the time ). This includes anything from a bad mouse cable to a failing processor. OS X doesn't freeze.

It's not a kernel panic. Do you see anything on the screen? Do you see anything if you connect an external monitor? If not, it's the dreaded iBook logic board issue. You'll definitely get better help on this one in the iBook forum.

Yeah, thanks. I did track that down. It belongs to Little Snitch. I uninstalled it and the kernel panics vanished.

Hello Guys, I desperately need your help!

I have an imac running on 10.3. it's about 7 months old. today it just crashed. and then when i restarted it, it freezes. my desktop loads as normal, everything looks normal, but if i click on any of the files/desktop icons..nothing happens, it freezes, that swirly colourful circle starts spinning and it stays like that. this happens everytime I restart. I've reinstalled the osx software...still the same thing happens. tried all the booting in safe mode stuff, makes no difference. I don't know what else to do. I'm a bit of a computer novice so please forgive me if i sound vague or like a child just ranting on. I'm just very worried because I have important files for uni on my mac and it looks like I'm going to lose them. what can I do? anyone recommend anything? something that will retrieve my files at least if nothing else. :/

A friend of mine recently asked if I knew what could be going on with her PowerBook. This is what she wrote:

I probably should have locked this thread when I first created it. The goal of this thread is/was to provide a solid starting point for diagnosing a crashing machine. Unfortunately, this hasn't been a particularly good place for people to get answers to their questions, as it is not frequented. I'm locking the thread in order to entice people to read the important information, but also as a sign that I have no problems with people posting related questions outside of this thread. I wasn't trying to get rid of the clutter of questions--just the clutter of the same questions over and over again that could be answered with a simple FAQ.

That being said, if at this point you still have a question and think you may have a hardware issue, post in the associated hardware forum. If you still think you have a software issue, post in the associated software forum.
