I've had this thing maybe two weeks and today when I select sleep from the Apple menu, nothing happens. If I close the lid, it goes off, light still stays solid. THen opening the lid does not wake it and I have to hard restart.

Then when I hit shut down, I get the spinning wheel and blue screen and nothing happens.

I have -
fixed permissions
verified disk
reset PRAM
reset SMC

Any ideas or just take it into a genius bar?

Reinstall the system software. Try an archive and install first, then an erase and install if that doesn't work. If these don't work, have it declared DOA and get a new one.

Just for giggles before doing the reinstall, try the standard trouble-shooting practice of establishing a 2nd admin user. Login as that user and see if sleep works.

K, archive and installed and that did not fix the issue(s) either.

I got it from MacMall and I don't believe they take returns. So, the genius bar I guess? It's under warranty right, so I wouldn't have to pay for repairs?

yep, Genius Bar is the way to go--hopefully not too far away? Go to the website and see if you can make an appointment because they're usually crowded and won't see you without one (unless it's perhaps early on a weekday.) You're covered for one year, and you could also try calling the 800-number and seeing what they can do.

So you think the 1800 number would be a benefit? Just think they'll tell me to take it in. Maybe I'll call this weekend if they are open.

Let me ask the obvious but did you add an extra stick of RAM?

Macmall did, and the mbp2 was fine for the first two weeks. Should I run a memory check on it?

Yep, it could be the RAM.

Don't run the test, remove the extra stick of RAM, and see what happens.

K, I already ran it, everything was fine. Should I still take the stick out anyway or by running the test already mess that up?

Ya know, duh, actually I did not have any additional ram added, it's the stock 1gb.

Even Apple-supplied RAM has been known to go bad. So, you could remove one stick of RAM and see if that resolves anything, then reverse the process.

Plus, I'd also recommend the erase and install (after backing up.)

amazing- Would the memtest find out if the ram is bad? Everything checked out OK. How do you remove ram from the MBP?

Damn, not looking forward to erase/install with Parallels and XP and all the apps I've installed. I'll have to see if I have enough space on a drive to backup to.

K, I just erased and installed and after installation, it went to sleep and won't wake up. Oddly, the volume keys produce sound. So, I'll have to hard reboot and the erase install did not fix the issue(s)

K, rebooted, won't sleep, or shutdown, hangs on restart as before the erase/install. It's defective I guess, bummer.
