Way better than expected both in story and acting. Say what you will about his wacky religion but Tom still has it. New characters also pretty good even if not entirely 2-dimensional.

I’ve heard so much good stuff about Poor Things. I’m glad to see you concur. Hopefully, I can stream it some day. I still can’t bring myself to go to a theater. The experience was pretty shitty before covid. Post-covid, I just can’t.

I hadn't been to a theater in years before seeing Barbie last year. There's a new one near us that does assigned seating with power reclining seats that are paired together so you can sit next to a friend with no armrest between you. I was used to the gross fold-down worn-out auditorium seating with sticky floors in theaters of my youth but this was not that experience. Tickets are $10-13 each - that $8 movie ticket in 2004 is $13 today with inflation, so it's not even that wild. Now if you go to the snack bar they'll get you but the experience and base cost is pretty great compared to how theaters used to be.
Some things absolutely deserve to be seen in theaters. Big screens and recliners are nice but also supporting small local theaters too. Thorz, you may find that certain showings are not crowded etc. I use Fandango app and most theaters you can pick your seats etc.
I can’t remember the last movie I saw in a theatre.
Back to the Future (part 3) in 1990. My sis and I treated our mom, after treating her to Part 2 in 1989. We liked the movies, but were sitting too close to one of the side speakers. It had a healthy volume.
Now I remember! I went to see Isle of Dogs, but some crazy guy tried to break into the theatre through the fire exit. One of the people I was with freaked out so we left.

Yeah, we have a real IMAX theatre not too far away — not the fake branding that every theatre has, but one of the real beasts — and I’ve managed to catch a few great movies there. Dune was….almost overwhelming!

A large TV makes things better, sure, but still does not replace the theater. I watched TG:Maverick on a 49" screen with 25yo surround sound and it wasn't bad; in a theater with full sound I bet you could feel the engines roar.
Not all movies showing on imax are prepped the right way. I watched the last black panther on imax (the one leonard nimoy grew up 3 blocks from) and it made me seasick. Did not appear formatted for imax. I've seen lots of movies in that theater and never experienced that.

Miserable experience. I’m one of those people who needs a high frame rate for IMAX 3D to work. At a normal frame rate I just see flickering between the right and left image 24 times a second.

I saw The Dark Knight Rises in the local science center's IMAX theater, which is a dome. We got there a bit late and ended up sitting too close and the whole movie was streeeeeeeetched out.
In late 2019/early 2020, they just opened a new theater just down the road from me that actually makes the official IMAX list. Haven't seen anything on that screen yet.
I spent the pandemic upgrading my living room. It’s not that big but I did a quality job with it. I ended up with a 65” OLED (LG C series), which isn’t massive and could be upgraded but plenty awesome for about 9.5 feet from viewing eyes. I found Totem Tribe III on-wall speakers for the Left-Centre-Right channels, then fished speaker wire for sealed Monitor Audio in-wall speakers for two rears (CP-WT380s) and two Atmos heights (CT380s). I found a Rythmik F12 subwoofer and I’ve recently upgraded the theatre receiver from a Marantz SR7013 to a Marantz SR8015, which is a real beast (I still haven’t added the dedicated 20-amp line it really needs because our panel is maxed out…will do that whenever we get the first EV and need a charger I guess).
It’s a real nice 5.1.2 setup and I couldn’t really add anything more in the living room space without severely diminishing returns (especially at the price point of this equipment). Plus the Totem speakers and sub are also real nice for quality stereo audio…I recently demoed a very fancy new pair of KEF bookshelf speakers but ultimately returned them because the upgrade was so marginal.
Everything from the used market except the TV. It’s extremely stealthy and has a super high style/wife approval rating, but everything actually kind of rips. I have to say, it’s really improved our movie watching experience to a huge degree — it really feels close to being in a theatre.

The CG bothered me initially because the cat is so badly done, but I ended up forgiving it as the movie progressed because of the silliness it enabled.
Anyone remember Beetlejuice (1988)? A sequel is coming out September 6, 2024. First teaser below.
It's been 36 years, apparently in the movie too. Several original cast have returned. I wasn't expecting a sequel to this movie, but let's hope it's worth the wait.
First time I’ve been to a movie theatre in years. Only 4 or 5 other people. The seat hurt my ass. Real butter on the popcorn was nice. Also went to the Picasso exhibit at the Art Institute which was better than I expected. His paintings leave me kinda cold, but this was mostly sketches. Small exhibition. Only a few galleries.
This was in the exhibition, and as his abstract paintings go, I liked it more than usual. Nearly 6 feet tall, it’s much more impressive (and earth-toned) in real life.

Pierce Brosnan and Morena Baccarin; a hitman wanting to retire movie, but it doesn't seem cheap or tired. Subtle humor. Nice relationship between characters.
My wife and I finished Resident Alien yesterday on Netflix. It was great, Alan Tudyk was amazing. His ability to act awkwardness and his wry humor fit the part perfectly, an alien impersonating a human. While it wasn't too deep, it was entertaining and watchable before bed, it did leave some mysteries and did not dumb everything down too much. Very well-made TV.

Excellent, but disturbing. I’m still processing it. No matter how hard he tries, Sandler’s comic voice pops in every now and then. Of the numerous influences, ironically Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is what springs out at me the most.

Dune Part 2:
If Part1 suffered from being slow (anguish-filled staring at the desert for hours) then Part2 ups the game with lots of action and faster pace. Sometimes hard to follow especially as there's not much of a "remember this guy?" exposition. Romance bit was deemed a little too much by one family member; but anything less cringe than anakin/amidala seems restrained by comparison.
we enjoyed. This is one to see on the big screen with good sound; during some battles our chairs literally felt thunderous bass. Even in the cursed 2cd row the view wasn't bad due to recliners.
There’s a little japanese film on Netflix right now called The Parades that I liked quite a lot. It’s sweet and gentle in the way japanese films do really well. It deals with recently-deceased spirits who have gathered together in a little group, waiting for their opportunity to cross over. It isn’t dark or heavy, though.

Agreed. Low key and carried by Brosnan's easy charm. I'm guessing he mangles a southern accent but it made me want to visit Biloxi etc just to see the place for real.

It wasn't the worst accent I've heard. It wasn't a tryhard. Maybe a southerner would be more mad; to me it was subtle "non-british" with a little twang.
