I may need to replace my current SUV, a 2005 X5 sooner than anticipated.
I haul stuff, enough I should probably get a van, but that's improbable.
Bigger is better, but there's an upper limit. I'd put that at a Yukon, which is my current top contender.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

The reason it may get replaced is it wants $10-****ing-K in maintenance.

It's a BMW. WTF did you expect? Even the air in the tires costs triple.

I'm not surprised by the cost, but I was expecting it to happen a few more years down the road.

A thread about SUVs. It's missing something. Can't quite put my finger on what ...

What about a largish wagon?

The idea actually appeals, but aren't I going to be talking a downgrade in carrying capacity over even an X5?
Looking practically, the capacity is the most important thing. As I said, I should get a van.
I understand it's a failing in me, but I think a van as my only vehicle would make me glum.

Sounds like you should buy a used truck and a small storage trailer that can be towed.

If that was practical, I'd just get a Suburban and consider it done.

The Yukon drives like a boat. Horrible, at any speed exceeding 50mph. Scared the living daylight out of me.
We're in the market for a 7 seater as well. Top contenders right now are the Mercedes G class or the Dodge Durango. Same platform, but a serious difference in price.
If you insist on a truck based SUV then the best choice would be the Ford Expedition. The independent suspension at the back makes it behave marginally better than the competition, but nowhere near as nice as the BMW you're used to driving.

Eww.
The new Volvo XC90 should be available soon, IMHO the interior is not as attractive as the old one, but the exterior makes up for it. I will get one if they decide to offer a real 6 cylinder instead of their EDrive engine.

There is no way you could be glum motoring around in one of these, no way.

The Jeep GC with the Fiat diesel engine is getting a lot of love on Airstream forums. People are loving them for both towing and hauling ability.

A friend of mine had one of those back in high school. I got drunk for the first time in my life in the back of that thing. First make-out, too.

This has switched from "may" to "will". I'm having them do the absolute minimum to get the thing to pass an emissions test (so I can renew my plate), and am officially on the hunt!

Looked at the Durango. Am I crazy, or is that way too small an engine for something that size?

Not totally against the wagon. Volvo XC70 claims it has equivalent storage to the X5.

I had a (regular) Cherokee before the X5 and loved it.
What bothers me about the current GCs is, well... they look like Range Rovers.
That's a problem for me, because I really want a Range Rover, but can't justify it for hauling. I wish Land Rover still made the models you can wash out with a hose.
The upshot though is a GC would be another "glum" car for me.

When we moved to Canada I thought long and hard about bringing my old Land Rover, but we decided against it in the end. It was a 1964 SWB Model II with a canvas top and I loved that car. Hosable, from top to bottom.
Not all that useful in a climate where it's either freezing or boiling, with little in between.
I'd give the GC a chance. The engine is brilliant, and it has excellent carrying capacity.

I'm leaning towards the Volvo wagon more and more. That's probably the "nicest" car I can get which isn't ridiculous to consider a work vehicle.

I think this is where I usually recommend a Subaru instead. Not sure though which has more cargo space.

Re: New versus Old
If I can expect about 10 years out of a car before it becomes a pain in my ass, isn't paying half for a four-year-old model pretty close to a wash?

My brother has this one. It's really nice. Bigger than the X5. But not huge like a Yukon.

I like the look of that, but I think I may have drank the wagon kool-aid.
It's only got 8 more cubic feet of space than a big wagon.

There's one parked out front of my apartment right now. I'm impressed by the cargo space.
This person has the same idea as me on some level. It's clearly a work vehicle.

The Outback is gaining traction.
I'm not sure I'm going to get $15k worth of enjoyment out of what the Volvo would give me.

Just remember that seats fold.

NO! I've had 2, both ate their own transmissions shortly after 30k miles.

Both the Honda CRV and the Subaru Forrester will accommodate your gear just fine, and they are way more reliable and less expensive to repair than the Volvos.
