If I could iPod a Kenwood or an Alpine I'd be interested. As nice as a new bimmer would be, that won't be happening soon for me.

Can and probably will take advantage of this. Figures they'd release this a month after I finally got around to installing the aux input to my car.

I think I'll bite the bullet and upgrade, seems that the integrated charging makes it worthwile it itself, and the controls (though limited) would still be better than fumbling with the iPod while driving.

seems extremely worthless to me, they should have left the ipod out of the glovebox so you could choose to use either the ipod or the cd changer controls

Wooo, so now I can finally take my high class car, combine it with my high class audio player, and get what? Easy access to all my music?

No.

What do you mean?

Well, first, go to iTunes, create 5 special iPod playlists for the BMW, and only put 99 songs into each one.

ok....

Then, put your iPod into the glove box, attached only to a cable, and let it slide around when you drive.

ok....

Then, enjoy selecting music to listen to as if you had a 5 CD changer with 99 songs on each. So, your favorite song, is, disc 3, track 46.

Hmm, guess I can live. How can I use this on my BMW with the navigation option?

Oh, sorry, forgot. Not available on vehicles with navigation system, CD changer, DSP cassette player or satellite radio.

-----------------

Sorry, not impressed with what Apple and BMW came up with here. You loose the advantage of having your entire music collection, and it takes more work to maintain your music. Seems to be the opposite of what the whole iTunes + iPod thing was supposed to be about.

Oh well, I'll keep my horribly old and archaic car MP3 solution that has served me fine since 1999. At least with it, I can play all my songs at the touch of a button, see what is playing beyond "track 64", and have more features then any iPod has ever shipped with. For those interested in what player I am talking about, look up the empeg-car. Sadly, a player that most people overlooked back then, since noone understood the value of having all your songs on one device.

Wake me when real car audio innovation occurs beyond what I have had for 6 years.

If it uses the iPod, it is not more advanced then what I currently have. Sorry. Organazition by single layer playlists, or predefined artist/album views is less control then I have had. It also does not offer quick search capabilities that I have had.

Better then the BMW deal, and on the right track, but not enough to get me to consider changing.

Right!

The Honda Element (blech!) has an audio-in port that supposedly will let you plug in an iPod. You still have to use the iPod to control the music, but at least it's better than fm transmitters, and no expensive car modifications, like this BMW thing.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with this solution at all. Looks half-assed at best, and too limiting to fully exploit the power of the iPod. Should we give this the "well, at least it's a start, i guess?"

Go about 1/2 way down this page....

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showt...highlight=ipod

and see what iceLink may have in store for the iPod and BMW's with NAV.

This tom@densionusa sounds like he is involved with the development of this product.

Agreed. This is a rather clunky solution from two premium players. I expected more from a BMW/Apple collaboration. Not that I can afford a Bimmer anyway, so I guess my opinion doesn't count.

Check out www.dension.com - I've just installed their IceLink system in my Audi and it's great. Does everything the Apple/BMW system does, and it's available for a huge range of OEM and 3rd party head units. Not cheap, but a damned sight cheaper than a CD changer (can you even get a car CD changer with 300+ capacity ?)

While I agree with your points (why the hell is there no track-display on the player? Trk01? Is this a CD?), you can _either_ play from your BMW-playlist (why is this needed ) OR from your entire library:
To listen to iPod music in your BMW, you can either create up to five unique BMW playlists within iTunes, or choose to listen to your entire library.
