Hello,

Virtual PC 6 (and 6.1) and Panther drive me nuts :-( When I launch VPC (no matter wether 6 or 6.1) I get a dialog box where I have to enter my password "in order to complete installation" (although it is already installed for a long time now). Then a message appears, that says that the the rigths on some files could not be changed (but doesn't say which one) and that "virtual switch" could not be activated (that means that the emulated PC would receive its own IP address). Any suggestions?

Thanks, Lars from Dresden (Germany)

sorry, no suggestions. But I can confirm that VPC 6.1 works flawless here, so it must be something with your installation.

Are you using "Virtual Switch" and W2k or how is your installation configured?

I have exactly the same problems with vpc5 since I installed Panther on my 12 inch/1GHz Powerbook.

More: If I try to identify the root user to switch the file permissions with the cited dialog, vpc does not accept the passoword/user combination although root is active and the password is definitely correct (I have checked with su in the terminal).

Sometimes NT4 does not boot completely and makes the Powerbook hang so badly that only ctrl - command Power helps. This did not occur with Jaguar on the same machine.

Did you try repairing permissions with the Disk Utility?

Why do you say this. Is there a problem? I am using the same config and have constant freezes and slow downs. And Printer sharing does not work either.

Hi again,

I have all permissions ok and it still does not work.

In the meantime I received a message, that a library (VirtualSwitch.kext) has not been properly installed. Update was recommended. Joky, because M$ does not offer an update for VPC 5.

So it would be very interesting for me if Lars can solve his problem with VPC 6. Please go on posting!

I found an article on Low End Mac about this too: http://www.lowendmac.com/archive/03/1219.html

Have you tried logging in as root and then installing VPC?
