iMac 1st gen won't turn on anymore :(

This iMac belongs to a good friend of mine. She says today, after probably 5 years of use, it refused to turn on.
I know I am not giving you much in terms of info on this issue, but just off the top of your head, what would be the 1st thing you would suspect would be the reason?
2nd and 3rd wouldn't hurt either

Does it bong, seem to be starting up, then right when the video display is supposed to come on abruptly shut off?
If so, bad flyback transformer. The imac is dead and not worth fixing. Replace it.

If it was the battery it should still be able to boot. it just won't hold the time or other settings.

I've run into this problem with early (pre-slotloading) iMacs more than once and replacing the clock battery has ALWAYS fixed it. Also press the CUDA reset button after battery replacement. The PSU and power management system in these old iMacs is pretty flaky.

Ah okay. The battery is the least expensive thing to try first. Start with that.

Nope, most Macs made since about 1993 refuse to boot with a dead battery. The symptom is that the machine powers on, and gives a startup chime, but never begins booting, and the screen stays black.
The battery in an iMac is the usual 3.6V 1/2AA lithium battery. Radio Shack sells it for about $15, as a "Apple Mac/Security System" battery, on the same rack as photo batteries. OWC sells them for $6, I think.
