Yeah... I’ve gotten whiplash from a very minor collision.
That made me go though the thought archives.
I’ve been hit twice, I’ve hit other people twice, and once hit a parked car in reverse as a teenager. So I’m averaging about one every 6 years.
Edit: remembered a third time I hit someone, so every 5 years, though I should note, lest anyone think I’m a psycho driver, none of these occurred in this century.

So, for some old-timey woops enabling, that intersection?
Is the same intersection by that red box.
Rather than gently curve like it does now, you used to have 8 lanes making two 90° turns.

I’m trying to remember if I actually drove on it. If so, it was only a few times. It was demolished right as I started driving.
I do have distinct memories of driving during the cluster that was the whole thing being closed and all that traffic getting detoured onto regular city streets.
There’s still a really tight turn a bit further north and it used to have a wipeout every day. It got better once they painted the approach with a ton of horizontal white lines.
I miss all the fun now because my van isn’t allowed, but when I was much younger and had a sporty car, all up and down here was where I did really dumbass shit at 2 in the morning.

It's an RAF Harrier II, lost in Sept 30, 1991. Mission was a testing/training exercise. Pilot took off, but mistakenly believed takeoff was unsuccessful. Attempted to abort, but ran out of runway. Ejected with plane about to hit the end-of-runway net. Plane continued into the Ems river (or canal) in Germany. Incident Report
Edit - subego found it, in the time it took me to track it down. In my defense, I think he had a 5-hour head start.

So much to love in that picture including the slightly dejected stance of the service person on top of the fuselage but the waiting to be useful liferaft wins the pic

None of that is going to buff out, but both Harriers should be easily salvageable.
While I was stationed at Kessler AFB in the early 1980s, a Navy A-7 (a single engine plane) was headed back to NAS New Orleans from over the gulf when the engine started going bad. The pilot tried to abort to Gulfport airport, but the engine konked out before he could get there.
He carefully ditched the plane in the shallow water just off the beach, ejecting at the very last minute. Unfortunately for the people on shore, the plane was sort of aimed directly at a busy restaurant as it went down...
The pilot was essentially unharmed, and the plane was hoisted up out of the water pretty much intact. First, the pilot kept the plane from hurting anyone. Second, since he got it down in shallow water and the plane could be recovered, they could figure out what went wrong. He got a medal for that. Sadly I can’t find pictures, but footage of the recovery was used in some schlock SF movie shortly afterward.

As my wife noted, "that's disturbing". Details, if you please? 'Cause none of that is going to buff out.

Looks like the nose of a container ship - it's sideways. Keel on right, deck on left. Cars were being stored below decks. Any containers on top would have fallen off. And it must have sat (sideways) in shallow water for an extended time - that's the brown grime coating the "lower" half.

Wonder how the rest of the ship fared. Less than watertight after that.

That takes skill. Perfectly centered hit.
It's a light post, if anyone's curious. You can see the access hatch, where they work on the wires inside.

I think that was the intended result. He was tapping (not swinging) and the cap bolts were already removed. The strut arm was supported at center, though they should have used two straps. So it doesn't drag an end.
They misjudged their air pressure. Or had bumped it up when it wouldn't release earlier.

But I agree, it looked intentional (if ill-advised).

Working on old motorcycles, you end up with a lot of brake calipers that have seized pistons. My favorite way to get them out is to hook up a grease gun and pump grease in there until the pistons break free and push out from the gradual hydraulic pressure. A lot of people advocate using compressed air, which I find terrifying. You only have about a hundred psi of air pressure, and it's a giant spring. Once the piston breaks free, it becomes a projectile. Not to mention the aerosolized old brake fluid that was still in the caliper that gets sprayed up in your eyes, face, and mouth. With the grease, you can easily do 2000psi with a handheld grease gun, and because the grease is incompressible, there's no stored energy. The piston pumps out and you're done.

I’d love to see the video of them righting the thing. Or, maybe they just call it dead and disassemble it for parts where it sits?

No, they right it. They put in a sort of pillow under one side and blow it up to start the process. Once started, they hook onto something to pull it the rest of the way over, but the center of gravity needs to be close enough to the other side (where it will pivot) so it doesn’t start to slide, so the pillows are necessary to start it.

Me too, but via video. If it can get turned all the way upside down, I am curious as to what can go wrong turning it back upright. I bet a LOT of things can go wrong, inflatable pillow not withstanding.
