Unfortunately, or fortunately, I'm a firm believer in not sleeping where I work.

I give you one winter to work out why that's a dumb idea unless you live in the tropics/subtropics.

Or a summer, for that matter. Sun + Metal Roof = Oven

My old boss did it in a truck bay. The only thing which made it tolerable in the summer was opening both bay doors and keeping a baseball bat handy to fend off itinerants looking for shade.
Oh, and box fans. Lots of box fans. In winter we'd help him rope them all to the ceiling.

I had an idea about something along these lines but it involved a larger warehouse and a secondary shell inside the primary. Having your garage connected to you living space is so against code in most places I'm wondering if he even bothered getting a residency permit (or a building one.)

That was my thought as well. Depending on where he is there may not be (enforced) regulatory oversight. But I'd be very surprised if installing a permanent residential premises in what is probably zoned-commercial warehouse space wouldn't eventually cause problems in most places of the country.
Having said all that, it's a fantastic thing if you can do it. Having the space would be awesome. Needs basketball net and ping-pong table as well!

I had a thought along these lines as well. I believe we can safely assume no.

While I can do without the various rants, I do enjoy seeing what Rob is building, fixing, etc. We need more threads like this with user-generated content. Who else is building something?

I'm building a religion. I'm building it bigger; I'm widening the corridor and adding more lanes.

Warehouse conversions with loft style living spaces are great. However, this requires zoning changes and permits, and of course, proper building practices. Just adding a few bedrooms to a warehouse without approval or inspection is just foolish, and of course doesn't meet code. People doing them shouldn't expect anyone to insure them, and if the city finds out, they'll get a nice hefty fine and will have to pay more to rip it all out.
-
I am almost finished with our basement reno. The contractors knocked out support walls and added a ginormous steel I-beam to support the weight of entire centre of the house up to the roof, which meant re-pouring the cement footing in the basement. HVAC guys redid the entire ductwork in the basement, and then redid some of it going up to the main and second floors too, with a new smaller but more appropriately sized furnace with larger supply and return ducts, and a larger but more appropriately sized AC unit. We added a kitchen, which was against zoning bylaws, but we petitioned the city for a zoning change for my house, and got it approved after much wrangling (months), and after a complaint lodged by an idiot neighbour down the street.
I ran 2 x coax and 2 (or more) CAT6 or CAT5e everywhere in the basement, and also ran some of it to other floors when the walls were open for the HVAC ductwork. I did all this myself because I didn't trust the electrician to do it, as they generally just run everything in parallel with the electrical, which is a big no-no for networking (and coax). Fortunately, local code says that's all perfectly fine for DIY by guys like me, because it's low voltage and not dangerous. Now we have Gigabit Ethernet almost everywhere in the house. There are only a couple of places with no network jacks (since I didn't have easy access), but I've strategically placed network jacks so that if necessary, all parts of the house can have strong signal via 802.11n WiFi. I've even run outdoor direct burial CAT6 to the gazebo in the backyard. It's connected to the house network, but I've put in a grounded Gigabit surge protector as a barrier. Which reminds me... The electrician is coming this week to install a whole house surge protector, to act as the initial barrier, with UPS units throughout the house acting as line smoothers and secondary surge protectors for important equipment.
Which reminds me... You really have to stay on top of things to ensure everything is done properly. My HVAC guys bonded the gas lines to electrical ground, as is required by code. They did this by attaching a wire from the gas pipe to the copper cold water pipe line, which in turn was connected to the main water supply line, acting as electrical ground for the electrical panel. However, subsequently, contractors cut the copper water pipe line to reroute it, and replaced it with pex, a sort of plastic. Pex is perfectly fine for water lines, but is not electrically conductive, so suddenly I no longer had a proper electrical ground for the copper water pipes elsewhere in the house, and the gas pipes were no longer bonded to ground either. Despite this, our house passed electrical inspection, presumably because the inspector didn't realize the copper piping had been interrupted. He probably just saw that the water supply pipe as acting as ground, and the gas pipe was attached to a copper water pipe. So, I had to get the electrician to reroute the grounding for the orphaned water pipe, and to rebond the gas pipe somewhere else in the house so it was properly connected to the electrical ground.
Renovations, when properly done to code, are @#$^*@#$#%&^& pain in the ass. However, they're ensure insurability, and more importantly, they're much safer.

I like the idea if there was a good way to keep it temperature controlled.

There is. You build to residential building code. Warehouse to residential conversions are quite common in large cities for example.

I think that living in a warehouse is both illegal and cold (or hot in the summers). No thanks.

I'm actually interesting in this one. Was this a thread? Looks like I'll have to wait for the next (larger) house before I can afford to have a dedicated room - sue me, I'm not in b-f nowhere Iowa - but I've already got my audio gear picked out.
