Way back in the OS8/9 era, there was a little free utility that you could drop a folder full of images on and it would identify any duplicates you might have, not by name but by appearance. It was pretty nifty and really handy if you had folders full of images and needed to weed-out duplicates.

Does anything like that exist today?

I think Graphic Converter does that, and that one is still around.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
