Additional promulgators of the conspiracy include Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy, former U.S. President Donald Trump, and U.S. representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia's 14th congressional district.

For a conspiracy theory, they didn't do it right. They're supposed to name-drop famous victims. I don't recognize most of those names.

While she looks attractive, I was unable to match up the background vs Des Moines. Some buildings look similar, but the road's too wide. Des Moines has their high-rises mostly around narrower streets. I'm also wondering about the swimming pools. My impression is that Iowa is pretty cold.

I thought the reference was more specific: I don’t remember any names, but a Clinton aide/confidante who was involved also in some business dealings committed suicide. The conspiracy theory was, of course, that he “committed suicide” (aka the Clintons did it). This shaped my early view of American politics as being full of conspiracy theories. I was on an exchange in 1997/1998 in the US during the Lewinsky scandal.

It really struck me as batty, at least for as long as I am politically conscious German politicians were and are not judged on that. Our last president was a pastor who was married. But the First Lady was his girlfriend of over 10 years. It was not even news. (No, the conservatives were not up in arms, when his name was floated in the previous election to President, by the Social Democrats, many conservatives actually said “Damn, good choice, too bad we can’t vote for him this time.”)

Ah, yes. Vince Foster. Probably the first solid realization (proof of concept?) of the right’s swing toward establishing an alternate reality, begun largely through (back then) talk radio. Up until then, it was all a loose melange of black helicopters, chemtrails, admiralty flags, etc. that were the purview of genuine nutters of all flavors.

The Vince Foster thing (and the attendant “Clinton Body Count” conspiracy) really seemed to take hold and spread its roots almost exclusively throughout conservative/right-leaning america.

Yeah, and that struck me as really odd and different. At the time, it really felt like a “witch hunt”. It was no longer about political disagreements, it struck me as unhinged and a sign of an unhealthy part in the political system. Things like the birther conspiracy were cut from the same clay: it isn’t that Obama has bad policy positions, he’s “not even American”.

It is unfortunate that the populist right in Germany is trying out the same strategies now.

It is also important to understand how the Clintons became what they are today. If memory serves, Hillary Clinton was criticized for keeping her maiden name — until she was forced to change it.
