According to Apple's web page this is a new feature, along with animated desktop. The desktop thing I can understand, it's the picture fading effect, nothing to write home about. But was are animated folders supposed to do? Can anyone with the latest build clue me in on this one?

It is a little misleading. What Apple means is when you use spring loaded folders and hold a file over the folder the icon goes from closed to slightly open. Nothing terribly exciting.

Sorry Conny - the guy didn't get it. Nevermind - try making your jokes a bit more obvious next time

Edit - the folder do open slightly - though if you aren't looking carefully you'll miss it!

On OS/2, 5+ years ago, they had animated folders. Well, 2 state folders. If a folder was open (like a finder window), the icon showed a slightly open folder. When you closed the window, the folder closed. In the settings for that folder (like Show Info) there were 2 icons you could change (drag other icons to) - one for the closed folder, one for the open.

Just thought I'd mention that. It was a nice feature.

To change an icon, you didn't have to copy and paste either. You could open the preferences for an object, then drag any other object to the icon drop location. It would take the icon from that object, and replace the icon on the object you were looking at preferences for. Much nicer than having to go to show info for one object, click on icon, copy, go to show info for another, click on icon, and paste.

Remember Kineticon for OS 7.5.1 - 9.2.2? Micons in Quartz/OpenGL/QuickTime could be quite fun, though distracting.

Animated folders?

All this is going to achieve is double the work of folder icon designers.
What does it mean, Steve doesn't want us to use custom folder icons?

Then again, we should have seen it coming. The HIToolbox.rsrc has had an unused open folder icon in it for ages.

looks great

I guess they also changed something funky in how you close a window, I mean the effect by which it disappears is so kickass.

Added to that, you could make individual icons the size of the screen if you wanted...

By the way, I'm sure lots of folder icon designers will relish the opportunity to do more interesting things with their folders.

Yeah, the Amiga Workbench was fantastic. Way ahead of its time. They had standard datatype plug-ins then, which Be implemented as well...I wonder why neither Apple nor Microsoft has adopted that concept.

NEXTSTEP also had drag-over images; I remember that when dragging files to a disk icon in the Shelf, the disk icon changed to show a beam writing to the disk. I think folders had a drag-over icon state as well.

Regarding folder icon designs in OS X -- I wonder how this "animated folder" thing is implemented. Have they changed the icon format to support it? Is there an extra hidden file in folders now? Or is it a system-level thing that only works with non-custom folder icons?

Anyone know?

Icons still work the same. I believe the animation is stored as just as another icon in the same file.
