Is there any way to upgrade the RAM in the new MBP retina? I should have upgraded when I bought it ;-(

This is one of the reasons I am not interested in the Retina version of the MBP. Apple tends to charge a stiff premium for RAM upgrades on new machines, and the the Retina MBP is already pricy. It also lacks a security cable socket (apparently due to the physical limitations of the case package is size), which really bothers me.

Technical reason why - Apple's retina machines use soldered-on RAM. This means that the physical RAM chips are attached to the main system board, rather than as separate little cards you can add or swap out later.
Sorry, dude. If you're within the first 30 days of purchase, you can go to an Apple store and see if you can convince them to let you swap it out and pay the difference, but that's completely subjective and up to the manager on duty at the store you go to.

Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

And low ceilings - 8GB max in the 13" is going to force it into early retirement.

Found a teardown here on theverge.com
I thought I read somewhere that you could, but I guess that must have been the last generation ...

No retina-display MacBook has had upgradeable RAM, so far.

Yeah, I generally only keep them a couple of years anyway so I don't have to suffer too long.

There are plenty of duties where 8 GBs RAM is adequate. That it doesn't fit your needs doesn't mean you can't sell it to someone who would yell "OMG 8 GB RAM no less !!!"
