I get two errors in my system log that I do not understand:

Dec 24 09:33:12 localhost kernel: AppleRS232Serial: 0 0 AppleRS232Serial::start
- returning false early, Connector or machine incorrect

And

Dec 24 09:33:17 localhost syslogd: /dev/console: Input/output error

I have an unmodified Powermac MDD G4 and a brand-new clean install of 10.3.7. From Googling "dev/console", it looks as if the two items above are related.

Should I be concerned about these? Any idea why they are occurring? I only have USB and Firewire devices, no old serial devices at all.

Edited: I disconnected all peripherals from the USB and Firewire ports, hooked up the Apple mouse and ran the hardware tests on the Powermac CD. Both quick and extended tests showed no errors, so I'm pretty sure all my hardware is OK.

The RS232 error is normal and expected.

I have the other one in my logs too. I don't know why, but I've seen it on a lot of machines. Errors in the startup logs don't necessarily indicate actual problems.

So, are you actually having any problems? If so, what are they? If not, don't worry about it.

That's good to know. No actual problems, but the perfectionist in me wanted an error-free boot process after a clean re-install of Panther. Thanks.

RS232 is the name for a serial port, and dev/console is the console port which runs on RS232. A serial cable looks like this. USB is the evolution of the serial port/cable.

On most enterprise level unix systems you can get the console (terminal) to display over a serial cable on another computer running a terminal emulator. The usefulness of this is that a system admin could view the console of many machines that run without a video card or monitor.

It looks like Darwin tries to initialize a serial port and fails in the bootup. This might be something useful for people that run XServe machines. Hope this helps a bit.

The RS232 support is there for the XServe which has a RS232 port.
