Hey guys,
I realize this may be the wrong forum, but anywho...

I have got a DSL account with Nildram, it was set up 3 days ago. I have a Solwise SAR 110 router.

Now, I get home and find an email from Nildram with all my details.

My static IP, my user/pass, the 2 DNS servers.

So, at first I open up Network, put in the appropriate info in PPPoE. I try to connect, I get it cannot find a PPPoE server.

I ring up Nildram, they say there going to ring BT about it. Everythings correct about it. Yet I still can't connect, anyone offer any help. Im dieing on 56k!

I might be 100% talking out of my behind here but shouldn't you be using DHCP if you're connecting through a router?

are you sure you do that under PPPoE? Did you try using DHCP with manual IP address?

Try PPPoA. As far as I can remember, BT doesn't support PPPoE (which is why you can't find the server?).

?

My settings:

PPPoA VC Mux
VPI 0, VCI 38

Don't be ashamed of your newbieness. We all start somewhere...

I really don't know anything regarding BT, but in your network pref pane, make sure Built-In Ethernet is showing in the drop down menu, then in the config menu, choose "Using DHCP with manual IP address". Enter in the information given to you.

Then go over to the PPoE tab, and enter in your username, etc.

See if that works.

Just making some educated guesses here. Good luck.

Swiss Bob, I just got off the phone with Nildram and they suggested PPPoA. But nowhere in OS X can I find how to enable it. All I can see is PPPoE.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks everyone for the quick replies!

Ok Oliver... I'll run you through how my setup is running..

On Your Mac:

Network/Ethernet/TCP.IP:

"Using DHCP"
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

DNS Servers: Whatever IP's Nildram gave you.

(forget anything about PPPoA/E actually on your Mac - you just need a straight TCP/IP connection)

-----
The Mac should at this point pick up a private address (192.168.x.x or 10.1.x.x) from the DHCP server on your router.

-----
Surf into the control page on your router (the manual should tell you what address it's at).

On the outside (ADSL) interface:

PPPoA VC MUX
VPI=0
VCI=38
The static IP address Nildram gave you is the IP address for the outside interface.

Fill in your user name and password on the router (edit: I didn't actually have to do this with my setup, so you may not have to either).

Fill in the DNS IP addresses Nildram gave you on the router.

----------
That should be about it.

HTH. Let us know how you get on.

I'm suprised that Nildram wasn't able to walk you through the entire process! My DSL is through Earthlink. I called technical support at Earthlink and they got me up and online with the first phone call. Also signed up for their wireless system since my wife has an iBook. We were able to speak to a technican familar with Mac's. Eventhough the setup was between Mac OS 9 & X our setup was accomplished!

Good luck iOliverC with you setup. Know that you will enjoy DSL!

This is the UK, W.D...

I've seen a few reports in the past which suggest that the people on the BT helpdesk don't know that they don't support PPPoE (and BT are the only ADSL "wires" supplier in the country - the main national telecoms provider).

Living here sometimes makes you want to

Got to agree with you about the UK, it just sucks.

Anyway, I have tried to access the config program type doodad.

The manuel says the address is at: 192.168.7.1

But when I type this in Safari or IE while the modem is connected. It says address cannot be found.

ANy ideas?

Hmmm...
Ok... In "Network/network port configurations", make sure that you've got the "Built-in Ethernet" at the top of the list. Maybe need to unclick the "internal modem" item (can't remember what I had to do, but I do remember that this tab was pretty important - the Mac tries to connect to 192.168.7.1 via the modem otherwise - which obviously won't work).

If you've done it right I'm guessing that you'll see the following on your "Network/Built-in-Ethernet/TCP.IP" tab:

"IP Address: 192.168.7.2 (provided by DHCP server)."

And you should be able to get into the router.

---------
If this doesn't work, try changing to a manual IP address in the "Network/Built-in Ethernet" tab with these settings:

IP Address: 192.168.7.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.7.1
DNS Servers: Whatever Nildram gave you.

---------
We'll get there!

What might be worth trying is ditching the Solwise router for now and connecting the Mac straight to the DSL modem. Just to make sure that your connection is ok.

Just a thought. If you decide to try that make sure to unclick everything except "ethernet" to make sure the Mac doesn't try and connect via the modem etc.

Im going to give Nildram hell on Monday, make sure they come down here and fix it.

Thanks for the help!

Ok.. If you can't see the router config page, it looks like you haven't got connection between Mac and router (try pinging 192.168.7.1 with "Network Utility" to make sure)

Could be a cable fault or could be the wrong cable (crossover vs straight).

Other than that I'm stumped.

The router is the modem, Mas.

I remember reading in the manuel, that if I was using one computer, I needed a crossover ethernet cable (not provided it said).

So im guessing I need a crossover ethernet cable?

This could possibly be the cause of your problems with Mac <-> router connection. Get a Belkin (quality) from your local PC World.
