What is Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions" good for? I know what file permissions are, but how can they become corrupted? Some people also report that repairing permissions has a magical effect on their systems, making it all snappy again.

I don't know how the permissions get scrambled, but they do. Repairing them does seem to help some problems. Installing apps seems to be the biggest culprit.

I just upgraded to 10.2.8 after repairing permissions, and the list of repairs after the install was huge.

There is some bookeeping at Apple that is not being done I think.
