My Euro-DVDs work just fine, still.
Never crossed my mind, but the computer didn't throw up a dialog box or anything, either.
should be fine.

SEND IT IN!!!!!!
Since it came out in November last year, you can't be past your warranty yet. Run immediately to your nearest Apple store and/or call Apple and get that fixed before it's too late!
Well, I sent it in (again), and this time they actually did something to it, because I finally burned a CD at 8x for the first time (before that 8x never worked and 4x had something like a 50% coaster rate..)
I'm not sure if they actually replaced the drive or just the firmware (was D0C4, now D0CB), but now my pointer hovers over the D101 updater. Should I or shouldn't I?
Because now that I have a working internal CD burner after 9 months, I'm a little nervous about doing anything to it...

Why not just hold back for a while. Enjoy your new found speed for about a month and if you still feel like doing it go for it.

Doesn't the downgrader take the drive back to DOCB? If I had a DWDB downgrader for my 17" I would have run the updater ages ago.

Eug, seeing as I am one of the people with a 17" PowerBook I have yet to try the firmware upgrade mainly because there is no downgrade path yet.
Do you think there is hope for the future that I will be able to downgrade my SuperDrive to its original firmware after upgrade?
Thanks

Hello all.
Like NY152, I am a little hesistant of doing the firmware upgrade without some type of downgrade path. I just got the PB 17 days ago and absolutely love it.

The only improvment you would see is 2x DVD-r.
Does anyone know if the 17" PowerBook also makes the double start up check noise with the D101?
Oh and by the way, welcom to MacNN .

Maybe there will be another Apple-certified firmware update for this:
http://www.macosrumors.com/
"Panther to support DVD+R/DVD+RW: In recent builds of Panther (7B49 notably), the Finder has been built with icons to properly display DVD+R/W discs mounted on the desktop. Although Apple's firmware for its various Superdrive vendors disables DVD-RW and the "DVD+" formats where supported by the drive hardware itself, this is a strong indication that Apple may be planning to support those standards in the near future. Whether this development will apply only to certain new machines or will be useable on any Superdrive is still not known, but hopes are high that this will soon no longer be an achilles heel of the platform."

The firmware upgrade works great for my 12" PB w/Superdrive too - now able to use DVD-RW from Toast with no problem. One question is coming up for me though - I just got Retrospect, hoping to use it to back up to DVD-RW. When I try to perform backup to it on either DVD-RW or CD-R though, I get the error "No disk storage devices found", even though the bus scan Retrospect performs does see the Superdrive.
Not having had Retrospect prior to upgrading the firmware, I'm not sure where the problem might lie. Is anybody else out there using a firmware-upgraded Superdrive to backup to DVD-RW using Retrospect?

Looking at the specs of the new 12" 1 GHz PowerBook, it seems that the ideas of some that Apple had just crippled the "old" 12" Superdrive's firmware were true. Because the new 12" seems to have exactly the specs of the D101 firmware (16x CD burning and 2x DVD-R burning)...

I ran pather on my PB via an external drive and it didnt at least complain. But it crashed to often to be able to burn anything.

STILL getting the double startup check sound thing.
Resetting the power manager didn't do anything.
Anybody else found a solution?

Quite frankly, I haven't bothered checking, because I don't really care either way. My burns and reads work great, and that's all that matters.

I just find it mildly disconcerting, is all.
Everything works fine here, too.

I'm glad you're happy, but I still don't recommend that 17" 1 GHz PB owners use this flash, because there is no downgrade path for it. The only downgrade is D0CB, which is used in the TiBooks and 12" 867 MHz PBs.

Cynikal,
You say the new 17" firmware downgrade may be useful for 12" owners as well. I take it that in that case, it's not really a downgrade, but more of a semi-upgrade. Is that what you meant?

I'm confused... so this firmware isn't rpc1... but I installed it and can still play all my region 1 dvds. Am I incorrect in assuming that rpc stands for region protection coding or something? If it is then why can I still play region 1 stuff? Or, does rpc1 stand for something else that is completely region free?

Nevermind... got it:
RPC-1 = A region free firmware
RPC-2 = An original firmware and not region free
BUT, I'm still confused then about how someone (too lazy to quote earlier in the thread) was able to play uk region 2 and I can still play us region 1. Anyone have insight into this?

Most drives should have something like 4 or 5 region switches. After that the drive locks into the last region used.

Does anyone know if the UJ-815 (using any of the firmware revisions) will read +R and +R/W the way the new machines do?
