Well, I meant to show off how cool Expos was -- very sweet, and I'm glad to finally be able to talk about it.

heh -- not quite -- the movie was taken with a beta of Snapz Pro X 2 -- the video capture speed is pretty amazing.
Anyway, Panther and Expos are even more amazing. I thought the idea sounded unworkable when I first saw it demo'd, but Expos has to be my favorite feature of OS X 10.3.

Nice done moki,
but could you make a video which is less nervous and irritable?
If I show this Video my PC-Friends, they would slander that Mac-Users drink to much coffee and would miss the point how useful Expos is.
(Think it that way: If Steve Jobs had shown in his Keynote this video, we all would have been very confused and not amazed)
P.S.
Please excuse my bad english, im german.

Wow moki, you and I use the exact same lantern icons for our hard disks (well, I use mine for the partitions on my external firewire drive).
I'm impressed at how well the DVD player and iTunes visuals cope with expos~.

Holy Gadzuookas.
That's one rockin demo. Now you ruined it for me before I get it installed on a g5 1.25 PB.
That is so cool with the ease of applications accessability.
WOW.
Later today I should be joining the club.
(If Fedex gets me mine.)

I agree about the hectic speed. Don't I remember hearing there's an option for having the changes move slo-mo?

I love the way palette windows fade away when you Expos. Very Apple ! It's so fast and subtle that you hardly notice it unless you use SHIFT.
..yeah, and the way DVDs keep playing is cool too. Shame the Exposd windows aren't smoothed thought !

Oh, you know you wanted to break the NDA. Everyone else was doing it.
And I'm more impressed w/ Snapz Pro 2 (simply because I've played w/ Exposé enough). I realize it's on the FASTEST OF THE FASTEST Mac right now, but it's still doing a damn good job at capturing the screen. I can't wait for its release!

Actually I bet you wouldn't be disappointed. I am running it on the same iBook (w/ati rage) and only 128 mb. Works amazingly smooth considering the hardware it's on, thought extra ram and HD upgrade is around the corner and will make it even better. It's great.

Okay... seeing that just makes me want to buy a dual G5. DVD, iTunes and much more all running smoothly while switching between apps/windows with Expose is very impressive.
I've been deciding between a G5 desktop or one of the new 15" Powerbooks... more and more I'm starting to lean towards the G5.

I have seen Expose on an iBook G3/500 with the 8MB ATI Rage Mobile graphics card. It's not as fast or as smooth as on the G5, but it's definitely usable.
I am amazed at a feature that has come out of nowhere and really revolutionized the GUI. This will change my workflow and make me much more productive.
Kudos to Apple!

As I work today I have had many times where I needed a non-visible window. I can't wait for Expose. Such a cool feature. Wonder how long it will be before Microsoft copies? 3yrs perhaps?

Great video moki.
I figured this was an appropriate thread to post the following Expose tidbit which I haven't seen mentioned previously.
If you invoke expose with F9, then hit tab, it cycles through each applications' windows ala F10. Perhaps this specific feature has been mentioned, but with a 5-button mouse, a small screen and a lot of windows, one can rapidly find what you want by programming one button as "F9" and another as "tab".
cheers.

Actually, M$ is currently copying that!
They have their own version of Quartz Extreme in Longhorn (using directx 9) and start doing crazy stuff with windows (it's not useful like expose but who cares! ).
You can see it here: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1154262,00.asp
They always copy everything... I think they have only one person working in I+D and he's always visiting apple.com

Wow, that's impressive. I can't wait to get Panther on my dual G5. Too bad that capture app is so fuzzy and choppy, I guess I'll have to wait to see it in person Just kidding, That capture is almost more impressive than Expose', I can practically read all the text on the screen. Thanks for the appetizer.
ixavi,
You complained that Longhorn is gonna catch up to Quartz Extreme? First MS has to actually ship product and now it seems that it's not gonna see the light of day till 2006. We may be on OSX 10.5 by then, who knows what else Apple will have up it's sleeve by then. Don't worry MS will have to wait with the rest of us to see how the future of the GUI is gonna pan out before they figure what "innovations" they will pursue

OT: IMHO Its ok?, there is really nothing you can do to stop or prevent this so I say let them enjoy it. Creative ideas such as these aren't meant to be monopolized and enjoyed by a selected few. Just as long as Apple continues to create wonderful possibilities such as these I'll be content on being an Apple user and could careless about what everyone else is doing.

Moki,
I re-watched the movie and your Snapz Pro 2 beta seems to be using between 20-50% of one cpu in your terminal. I want to see at least a 20% improvement in those numbers - start optimizing! Just kidding, just wanted to say that that's pretty impressive as you seemed to be hitting Expose' pretty hard. Expose' and Snapz Pro are both very impressive.

I definitely agree with your opinions Hydra and Ratm.
I know desktop compositing was not invented by Apple but it seems pretty obvious that they are trying to copy Quartz. I have no fears about MS catching up with Apple in terms of ease of use, integration and overall experience (all fears were gone once I switched to mac ). As some of you said we should be at 10.5 when MS ships Longhorn. OS X and G5 make the winning combination. Man that Expos demo is awesome... dvd playback not skipping and iTunes visuals at full speed... whoaaa!
Excuse my bad english, I'm writing from spain. Sometimes don't know how to write what I think.
Take care.

All I can say is that the requirements listed for MS's Longhorn points to 2 things:
1) The specs are rediculous. 8xAGP with 64MB min. (128 Recommended)? Very few users have anything close to this.
2) Maybe it answers some of the reason's it been 'pushed' back to 2006: with requirements like these, they need to wait for the market to even have some sort of penetration of users that have specs like this.
Suddenly Apple's 16MB requirement for Quartz Extreme looks like an absolute engineering marvel... Apple does it with 16MB and MS does it with 64MB and 8xAGP... Pretty sums up the differences of Windows vs. OS X right there...

Second that thanks. Much quicker.
Wow, that's my first look at that in action. Seems really useful. Hopes it as fast for others without a G5.

I installed Panther on my parents' iMac quite a long time ago, maybe a build in the 70s? I can't remember, but they have a 400mhz G3 SE and Expose worked very smoothly... not quite like this movie, but definitely useable.

Heck, it's just as fast on my 500mhz G3 Pismo, albeit it's not quite as smooth. So everybody should rejoice.
As much as I'd love the power of a dual G5, I will never again be forced to sit in a chair at a desk, tethered to the cords on a desktop machine.

It's a technology demo and proves how powerful Direct X is. They've got the same DVD there playing in three windows, all of them revolving and transforming and becoming semi-transparent. I'd love to see some Quartz Extreme demos like that.

It actually would be quite easy to do. The hard part about playing a DVD is decoding the video -- once that it done, it's easy to blit the same image into 3 windows.
Quartz also does support transparencies for windows, as well as arbitrary window transformations (not just rotation). So if someone wanted to write a demo like that for OS X, they easily could. And people could use it today, not in 2006 (as with Longhorn).

Yeah, we all know QE can do it. It would use more CPU on the Mac though because of the PDF aspect. Could you get a couple of your guys to do some fun demos?
