Looks like I'm going to be there for 4 days at the end of March. Anyone know what to do in and around Istanbul? Places to stay, etc?
I suppose I should start growing my mustache now, to fit in.

Lots of interesting shopping, the outdoor bazaars were awesome.

I was there over 30 years ago, in the service, so I'm not sure I could help you much now, other than to confirm MacNStein's post. I lived in Izmir for 18 months, and there are lots of ancient cities and ruins all over Turkey that are interesting.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

It's a beautiful region of the world. If you get the chance to get out of Istanbul, hit the coastal towns, they're lovely.

which coast? Mediterranean or Black Sea? I'd love to dip my toe in some water.
I guess I can figure out what to do in Istanbul. It's got some serious sightseeing. Anyone ever do the turkish bath thing?

The Med. but both areas are lovely for different reasons. In Istanbul, you'll do fine if you just wander around, even if you get lost, it's always a nice adventure.
Definitely go for a Turkish bath (Hammam), and a massage. The real full-on massage is one of those rare experiences where you'll actually enjoying putting your body through a lil' pain.

I went to Turkey last year - the place is fantastic. I would be back there in an instant if vacation time and money weren't an issue.
I stayed with friends near Taksim Square - they had a great view of the Bosphorous. If money is not a worry then I would try to find a hotel near Taksim and with a view.
As you only have a short time see the Royal Palace; the old bazaar; take a ride on one of the public ferries up the Bosphorous; Hagia Sophia; etc etc etc - there are loads of things to see and do.
And the Hammam is a good idea though ask around to find a good one - I went to the one near the Royal Palace - extremely ancient (building and attendants) - I couldn't really recommend it when compared to others that I went to further south.
Hope you have a great time

Because Constantine introduced Christianity, the Roman Empire was after this Christian, and the Turks are decidedly not Christian.

If you haven't had the opportunity to visit a 'real' mosque, do yourself a favor and hop over to the Suleymaniye Mosque ... you will not regret it, and the roundtrip should not take more than an hour or so.
Address: Tiryakiler Carsisi (Sıddık Sami Onar Cad.), Sleymaniye
