I've just switched from a PC (where I had the latest divx codecs and etc ...)
I was wondering because none of my video files are playing on my mac ... what program to use.
double clicking my files, Quicktime auto loads but says it doesn't have the required feature (or something) installed ... then something about that feature is unavailable to download (or something)
so I'd like to know what people here use .... thanks!

go to versiontracker.com and search for VLC - also - it is *software* so you probably would have found your answer by searching in the software forum....

You can also download the Divx and 3ivx codecs to watch some movies in Quicktime. But your best bet is the aforementioned VLC.

If I can't play it on VLC, mplayer, or Quicktime, I won't watch it.

Same here. All you have to do is download the codecs and drop them into your ~/Library/Quicktime folder.

Yeah, but mplayer and VLC will let you watch it in full screen. ;-)

...Pro.

VLC does it for free.

I find that with some codecs VLC's lip-sync will start to suffer after some minutes viewing. Quicktime doesn't as much.

MPlayer is also quite good.

A combination of the three programs and at worst, WMP, should play nearly everything.

I found VLC a few weeks ago and love it! So far I haven't found any video file that hasn't been able to play in VLC (Although I am sure there are some out there).

Oh and it's free too. Great stuff!

Seems Tiger has this feature for "free" too now.

You are both right, in fact.
You can write a applescript of 7 lines that will let you see Quicktime fullscreen even if you don't have Pro version

Save it was application:

on open theObject
tell application "QuickTime Player"
activate
open theObject
present movie 1 scale screen
end tell
end open

one thing I do miss from my windows days is that there was a utility to manually adjust the quality of the divX codec. So for fast-action movies, you could adjust it for less tearing, etc. Dunno if Mac does this automatically, or if we are just stuck with the default quality settings.

This can be done on the Mac too. When you open a DivX movie using quicktime, press the option key. It will display a window with settings for the DivX codec.

(OK, this is what I remember from a loooong time ago, so it might have changed, but the posibility to configure the codec was once there ... )

Windows Media and Real Player files, afaik, are proprietary and Quicktime will not play them (at least not on a mac, I don't know about Windows). VLC or MPlayer should play them though.

Or alternatively, use the native player.

Go to www.divx.com and get the free plugin for QuickTime. Plays .avi files without a problem.

Here's the direct D/L link to the new RealPlayer 10 beta download page (no need to fill out stupid forms and register with Big Brother Real).

See also this thread.

Oh, and: welcome to the Mac
