I'm back, kids.

Mostly because I just bought a 733Mhz PowerMac G4 on eBay last night, and I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions/problems within days of its arrival.

Very exciting.

So what all did I miss, besides tooki coming back after a (much longer) hiatus?

Banned by request, unbanned by request. It's nice and symmetrical.

You missed…uh…Leopard, I think. Which you'll still be missing with a 733 MHz G4. Why'd you go with that system?

Aren't I just a PARADOX?

And, yeah. I did.

<edit>
Well, I've read that I SHOULD theoretically be able to get Leopard on it. I'm going to give it a shot, at any rate. Any reasons why it's unequivocally impossible, or is it just not officially supported? After learning more than I ever wanted to know about the finer points of RAM specifications, I found some compatible RAM on eBay for a cheap price (like $13 shipped), so it'll have a gig. I've got an extra DVD-ROM I can stick in there as either an internal disk or in a FW enclosure, and I've got a 200GB hard drive (and a PCI IDE card to go along with it, since apparently the chipset throws a fit with more than 126GB on a single drive).

If I can't use Leopard, I'll throw Tiger on there. I got it for testing stuff for web work (what can I say, Safari for Windows (a) is crap, and (b) doesn't always behave the same as Safari in OS X). I plan on keeping it at home and using TeamViewer to RDP into it from work as necessary.

If it turns out to be a big mistake all around, I'll just sell it on Craigslist. I only paid $66 shipped for it (which seems to be a fairly decent price, looking at eBay's completed listings), so it won't be a huge loss.

So, whad'ya miss?

Kevin got permabanned (but then you knew that).
Rob got banned several thousand times.
Bessie made a lot of poop jokes.
Certain posters got more bitchy.
Certain posters got more awesome.

That's about it.

Upon consideration, I'm okay with being in either of those categories.

I still haven't gotten around to getting that done. I decided it was too expensive to really justify.

Instead I'm wasting my money on more ancient hardware.

And I moved in April. So that cost a lot.

Before I got my eeePC, it was my browsing/chatting machine in my living room (for when I'm just too lazy to go get the XPS M1330 my employer was kind enough to buy me). Lately, though, it's gone unused.

The only thing I do with it now is update a text file of all the MAC addresses that should have access to my home network. It's all very exciting.

Given how much effort and time I put into that machine though, I doubt I'm ever going to part with it.

Be careful adding more IDE drives to it. I did that with a PCI card and found that the power supply wasn't strong enough to handle all seven drives when waking from sleep, some wouldn't mount. (4 IDE on the pci card, two on the internal bus, one DVD-RW.)

You can put Leopard on there with some work. It's going to be painful on the graphics system, but otherwise will work.

Leopard base requirements are 867mhz G4, so 733 isn't that far off. It's the graphics that are the issue, and it can be made to run.

Yeah, I'm only putting one drive in. However, it's a 200GB, and I've read that this model's chipset can't address drives larger than 128GB, so the controller card is necessary.

This one has the nVidia GeForce2 MX with 32MB VRAM...a few people on the IRC channel mentioned it should manage the graphics without too much issue. If it's too bad, I'll put Tiger on it.

Welcome back

BTW, a friend of me got Leopard installed onto a QuickSilver 733 with the help of LeopardAssist, as you can read here it is feasible and painless to get it working.

Haha...sorry about that. I created the other account when I was having some weird problems with my regular account - it wouldn't login correctly.

I would never try to deliberately steal Dakar's mojo.

I pooped a crayon this one time. Other than that, this seagull landed on my window sill for a few minutes, and then flew away.

Really? How would I catch that seagull the next time it comes by? Should I put peanut butter all over the window sill so that the seagull will get stuck and can't fly away?
