In addition to the iPad Air 2, Apple has announced the iPad mini 3. The tablet has fewer improvements, mainly gaining Touch ID and a gold color option. It sports a smaller five-megapixel iSight camera, nevertheless capable of 1080p video recording. Wi-Fi is limited to 802.11n speeds, as opposed to the Air 2's 802.11ac. The tablet, in fact, continues to use an A7 processor, despite the A8 being in the iPhone 6/6 Plus and the A8X finding its way into the Air 2.

Wi-Fi models start at $399, and cellular models begin at $529. As with the Air 2, Apple has switched to 16, 64, and 128GB tiers. Unusually, Apple is keeping not one but both older versions of the Mini on sale; the former Retina iPad mini, now called the Mini 2, saw its price reduced to $299, and the original non-Retina Mini has been cut to $249.

Preorders for the Mini 3 start on October 17, and the product should ship by the end of next week.

I don't get why they skimped on the processor on the iPad mini when it's clear they could fit it in when considering space, heat etc. (it's in the iPhone 6 & 6+)

...Why even bother, Apple? You added TouchID and a new paint job. Nothing else. W. T. F.

1. Because they want you to buy the iPad Air 2.
2. Because the target market for the iPad mini cares not a whit about power specs.
