...or more specifically: Gibson Humbucker (500T, etc) vs. P90.
i'm lookin into a used or new Gibson electric in the sub-$900 range, so choices are limited. some models have the P90 pickup, so i'm wondering what that sounds like compared to a regular single-coil pickup (like on a Strat) and a standard humbucker. i've owned an American Standard Strat, Gibson SG and various no-namers in the past and do prefer the sound of a real humbucker. obviously i've never played a guitar with a P90, maybe it's just one of those things where i need to try it out for myself, but any input would be appreciated. if i do end up with a guitar with a P90 i will more than likely eventually replace the P90 with a mini-humbucker (with a coil splitter possibly). i play mostly metal/grunge, blues and pop/alternative. thanks in advance.

If you wouldn't have said the word "guitar" in your post, I wouldn't know what hell you were talking about.
Is that sad?

I just sold my Epiphone Casino last week. It had 2 P-90s, although much lower quality than could be found on a Gibson. I loved the sound....much more bite than a single coil, but turn down the bass and it had a bright, sparkley sound. My only complaint is the amount of noise it made. It would squeal when the amp was cranked loud enough. This was due in part to the guitar being completely hollow.
I loved the sound, much different than anything else. Maybe it will be too noisy for your liking, when playing your style.
Also, take a look at the P-94. It is an attempt to sound like a P-90, without the noise.

I played a trombone once. It's kinda similar.

I love P90s. I have a Goldtop with p90s in it and they wail.
In a good way.
