Pixar buys Disney

Just saw this posted to the front page of /.
What do you thinks this will bode for the future of both companies and Apple?
The board of Pixar Animation Studios, the digital animations company, is set to meet tomorrow to approve the company's $7bn (£3.9bn) takeover by Disney. The all-share deal will make Steve Jobs, the chief executive of Apple, around $3.5bn and the single largest shareholder in Disney. Jobs created Pixar in 1986 when he paid $10m for the computer animations division of Lucasfilm, owned by Stars Wars creator George Lucas.

Looks like Job's has just hit his payday - $10 million for Pixar - now owns most of Disney ($3.5billion!)

Jobs is the ultimate salesman.

This will be the second company that bought HIM that he'll end up taking over.

Note the negative number ("$-7 billion") in the title.

In ten years, Apple will be an entertainment company with a computer division.

Name one piece of entertainment Apple creates.

Apple and Steve have simply learned from their past mistakes. The old Apple would probably have ONLY sold the iPod, iTunes and iTMS to Mac users. The new Apple isn't going to turn their back on a good profit.

If Apple was serious about minimizing the computer component of Apple, I think we would see more of the pro apps being developed for Windows.

Twenty years ago, Apple was a media (entertainment) creation key player. Their machines made digital print creation possible.

Today, Apple is a media key player. They have added (or are adding) media distribution to creation and consumption. They make machines to cover all bases, and I assure you that content CREATION is as central to that strategy as it was twenty years ago.

The Mac isn't going away, nor is it being marginalized.

Now that I read my post again, it sounds as if I don't support the current events. On the contrary, I think it is very good for the Apple market when they have even more influence in the entertainment market. So, what I wanted to say was more "In ten years, Apple will be a big player in entertainment and have a big (read: bigger share then today) computer department.

Er, no. He'll just be the largest shareholder (not majority shareholder). As was pointed out in the other thread about this, I think, Disney's stock is worth something like $50 billion. Steve Jobs (who owns 51% of Pixar stock) gets $3.5 billion of the $7 billion deal. A sizable chunk, for sure, but not enough to take over Disney or anything. Yet.

Thanks for the clarification. So saying Pixar buys Disney for $-7 billion equals to Disney buys Pixar for 7 billion, right?

Well, that sort of remains to be seen. Either Pixar saves Disney and they start making some money again, or they make a few good movies but aren't enough to keep Disney afloat and they go down with the ship, so to speak.

I know I'm being an alarmist by saying this without having much info into the inner working of the deal, but I can't help but think that the Pixar we all know and love is now dead.

I know a lot of people are comparing this to the Apple-buys-NeXT thing, but Disney is a far uglier monster than Apple was back then. I just don't believe the beast that is Disney is capable of being transformed by Pixar like Apple was by NeXT.

Perhaps this could put Apple in a good position to buy Disney in a few years? Longshot.
