It has come to my attention that some of the "new" dual G5s may still be using the older Power PC 970 G5s, not the new 970FX. If true, that would mean Apple is still having problems getting enough 90 nm CPUs from IBM.
Open up the Terminal and type: ioreg -l | grep cpu-version
A result of 00390202 is supposed to be the old 970.
A result of 003c0300 is supposed to be the new 970FX.
All of you with rev. B dual machines should be PowerMac7,3 if you type: ioreg | egrep Power
To check your manufacture date, get your serial number ready and go to this page:
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
That will tell you the week and month of manufacture of your machine.

P.S. To get your serial number:
Click on the Apple icon in the top left --> About This Mac --> More Info...
The serial number is listed in the Hardware Overview.

Well, from the poll so far it seems that although some of the early ones did get the 970FX, currently we're still getting a mixture of 970FX and 970 chips. (Speed won't be an issue, since the two classes of chips are identical in that regard, but it's possible that fan noise might be a bit higher with the older 970.)
Also, the dual 1.8, dual 2.0, and single 1.8 are shipping the same day now at Apple. The dual 2.5, which only can use the 90 970FX, still has a 2-3 week shipping delay.
A lot of the 970FX chips are getting used by the G5 iMacs, but still, the 970FX supply issues are worrisome. And Apple has already said that we should expect 2.5 Power Macs supply to be problematic even by the end of this calendar year.

In addition to my DP 2.0, I checked a DP 1.8 at my local CompUSA--currently the only demo machine there other than a new single 1.8 and an iMac which are obviously 970FX.
It too is a 970 with a build week of 41 (October).
BTW, System Profiler shows a different G5 version, "CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2)" for the 970 and 3.0 for the 970FX, although I don't know if it's as reliable as the ioreg terminal command.

I have the older chips on the RevB manufatured week of 7/12/04. Its been totally silent. My thinking is that the NEW Chips will be Noisier as the heat/sqauare inch is ALLOT higher and needs more cooling even though its lower temp. In addidtion the revB with the Old chips have True RevB status where as the 970FX are really a first run in the RevB. So the older chips have the advantage of being fine tuned. Whereas the newer chips will still need fine tuneing down the road next Edition...
