I noticed the conspicuous lack of a couple of songs:

"My Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3 (although I had that album and loved it when I was 10 or so.)

And another overlooked gem:

"Pac Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia (who made an entire album about classic games of the time - Pac Man, Frogger, Centipede, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Defender, etc.)

There was some cheesy stuff on that album though. That song was a subtle political song, which doesn't happen today. Subtle that is. Hit you over the head is what they do now.

This is the correct answer. My band opened for them a few times, just as they were hitting their stride, and Barbara is a client of mine, now. Cool lady.

I'm sick of it now, but another of my guilty pleasures for a few years was Def Leppard's Love Bites, which is inexplicable as I've always hated everything else they did with a passion.

The 80's were not all cheese, though. Radio always plays the cheese because that's what sells, but no matter what decade it is, there's plenty of awesome music just under the radar. The 80s gave us the best of King Crimson, the Police's Synchronicity, XTC's Skylarking, Talking Heads' Remain in Light, Toy Matinee (a hugely overlooked pop masterpiece), Peter Gabriel was at the height of his career, Reggae & Rap were flowering, many of the old Blues masters were still alive and touring, and punk was still somewhat vital.

I pity anyone who gets all their listening cues from FM radio, because so much is missed by them.
