haven't seen this yet on the forums, even after searching a bit, so i thought i'd give this hint. i've been using it for a few days now and it works perfectly...easy to set up, too. i understand that there are people out there who think it is "unethical" to bypass Gmail's web-based mail since Gmail is funded by all those ads. i don't want this to be a controversial post...use it if it will help you, don't use it if you're uncomfortable with it. i'm not out to "get" any corporation...it's not a "statement" of any sort. it's just something i find very useful for my personal needs.

you will need:

1. MacFreePOPs 1.5 from version tracker or here

2. Mail.app or Thunderbird (or your favorite mail app)
3. an SMTP server (to send mail)...if you don't have one, pay the $14.95 for an account at fastmail.fm and you will get SMTP.

1. in MacFreePOPs, you can set it to run the POP server when the application is launched, and then quit the application. the POP server still runs. so, you can put in into your startup items and it will run the POP server when you start up your machine/log in.

2. in Mail or Thunderbird, the settings are as follows:
type: POP
server: localhost
port: 2000 i don't know if you need to open up port 2000 in your firewall, but i did.
user: [email protected] (the entire address, not just your username)
smtp: WHATEVER YOUR SMTP IS. FOR FASTMAIL, IT'S mail.messagingengine.com

that's basically it. one other thing would be to turn off the option of erasing messages on the sever after a certain time interval. i leave all the messages on the Gmail server as an archive. you can make your own folders and rules, too.

with this method, you can send and receive Gmail using mail.app or thunderbird...it works really well and i've had no problems yet. it should work for other web-based accounts, but i had problems setting up yahoo. hope this works for everyone...i'd be happy so help if anyone needs any.

Can't you just use OSX's sendmail, specifying localhost as the SMTP server?

Well, that's cool! Doesn't seem to be working, though. Won't take my password, and it keeps asking for it. I've double checked my Mail settings and they don't appear to be incorrect.

https://gmail.google.com/support/bin...13273&topic=-1

i saw that in the help section of the gmail page. it says you have to enable it for your account under the forwarding and pop section. mine only says forwarding, not and pop.

poo. hopefully it will be rolled out completely soon.

"Why dont I have POP access?

The Gmail Team is excited to announce that, over the next several weeks, we are introducing POP access to all of our users. To make sure the feature is fully stable, we're giving users access to POP in phases. Once POP access is available to you, a 'New Features!' link appears at the top of your account, along with a 'Forwarding and POP' tab on your 'Settings' page.

Our team is continually working to improve Gmail, and we look forward to offering you new features. Thank you for your patience."
well, there you have it

mine has. works great too.

mail.app doesn't seem to recognize all the threads of conversations i've had though. and i have to flip through every message unless i want a ton of "new" mail.

just be sure to get the right ports and everything.

I have it. working well. Just remember to turn on SSL for incoming mail, too, as well as outgoing, or else it doesn't work.

They are rolling the new POP feature out in waves. So all users wont get it at the same time.

i got my pop access today. works really well, really fast too.

i wonder if google did this due to people figuring out ways to get pop access anyway or just because. i was wondering what they plan on doing now with the fact that the web based gmail has adverts, and there are no adverts in the emails i received or anything.

happy i can finally do away with my hotmail account and now have something else for non main email account mail that works in mail.app

I got mine today. This is my first POP account in Mail.app (always had IMAP in the past) and I am a bit frustrated with the "Prompt me to skip messages over __KB" feature. I would rather it just skip those attachments and download the message only, without bothering me. I use GMail primarily for large files (mostly sharing mp3 files that I or my friends have recorded). I hate having to wait for Mail.app to download every file but I also don't like the annoyance. I'm going to send some feedback to Apple.

and i access the pop server and it appears to be fine but then nothing
is sent to eudora. looking at the logs i see this

262144:0.1.36 DNS Lookup of "pop.gmail.com"
262144:0.1.36 64.233.171.109 (1)
16:0.1.36 Contacting pop.gmail.com (64.233.171.109)...
262144:0.1.36 Connecting to 64.233.171.109:995
262144:0.1.39 Connected to 64.233.171.109:995
8:0.1.49 : -6994

and that is all. My next account it read after that perfectly.

wish i knew what -6994 meant?

Anyone get gmail to work with Gyazmail?

Exactly what are the advantages/disadvantages of POP and IMAP anyway?

yes i did. It works with Apple mail.app. I just tested it.

UPDATE: I tried Eudora 6.2. (was using 6.1.1) It has new SSL code via OpenSSL.
I now get much farther along. The logs show my password
being accepted and some info going back and forth as well as hashes
but then i get a

"Insufficient Disk Space" error

Well it is not me who is out of disk space haha. and of course
my mail reads in fine on all other accounts. Hmmm...

UPDATE #2 All is working now. Not sure if it was gmail or me really.
I did a clean install of Eudora. (Same prefs though) then made 1 change.

pop.gmail.com --> pop.gmail.com:995

in the personalities area. It shouldn't have changed anything since 995 was being used
in all the failed attempts but i added it anyway.

My guess is gmail spool space really did run out.

well the main advantage (for me) is not having to go into read/write mail via a web
page and you can read all your accounts via 1 app. This is the first time ever
I was not able to get a pop working in Eudora from the get go and I read
4 pop and 3 imap accounts already.

So my guess it is Gmail beta problems.

POP3 works by reviewing the inbox on the mail server, and downloading the new messages to your computer.

IMAP downloads the headers of the new messages on the server, then retrieves the message you want to read when you click on it. The messages stay on the server however, using GMails diskspace instead of yours.

I've got probably a couple thousand e-mails in mail.app and it's only like 78 megs why would you care about IMAP versus POP!?

Anyway this is great soon as it's enabled I'll disable forwarding and turn on pop

This is great I think Google is less worried about making money and more dethroning hotmail and pissing off Billy Boy

Because IMAP let's you have the benefit of both webmail and an email client.

With my .Mac email address I have access to all of my mail all the time on my powerbook, desktop, windows pc, and webmail while at school or at my mom's house. I never have to synchronize or forward messages. Any filing I do from any location is carried over to whatever location I log in from (i.e. I file a message using webmail while at school, and when I get home to my powerbook, the message is the correct folder).

With POP, if I download it on my powerbook, it's no longer available on the web, or from my desktop or other computer unless I don't delete it from the server. But then I need to file it separately on each machine I access from.

POP sucks compared to IMAP.

Mail.app has started prompting me for my Gmail password every now and then in order to check my Gmail mail...sometimes it will do it automatically like it should for a few minutes, and then it will prompt me to enter my account password. Any idea as to why? Is this happening to others?

started happening to me yesterday. i am not sure why. if i put the password in it usually does not accept it. if i press cancel and come back a few minutes later and reconnect gmail it goes through fine.

What are the advantages of having it pop-enabled vs having e-mails forwarded?

Anyway, it's pretty painless to have the gmail account forwarding to my Mail account.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I keep emails on the gmail server since I delete them from my .Mac account. I use my .Mac for most things but have the gmail for internet-related stuff.
To be honest, I don't need any other e-mail other than .Mac and my work addy, but since I do . . .

I wish there was a way to use folders like in Mail.app, I use them to keep work related emails sorted by sub folders.

This POP is not so bad as people say, because google have put the option in the retain the mail on the internet too, so it acts a bit like IMAP don't it?

But I am having problems. Mail can't connect to the Gmail server. Anyone else experiencing problems? Is it gmail's fault? I followed the instruction to set it up exactly. Edit - got it to work, had to set SSL for incoming (I don't think they actually tell you that in the Configuring Mail section of Help).

Gmail's POP downloads a given email once, to one client on one computer; you cannot easily download the same email to a second computer. Even if you select "Enable POP for all mail," it will only do this one time and then automatically revert to POP-ing only new mail, only once.

I constantly get connection problems with the Gmail account; anyone else? The account (unlike my many others) ends up 'grayed out' in Mail, and periodically it pops up a 'the mail server rejected your password' notices.

Yes, the password is entered fine -- if I hit 'cancel', and have it retry enough times, it eventually succeeds. But this situation is very annoying.

Anyone else have similar troubles?
