There are 40 people lurking right now. Is that creepy?

I looked down and noticed that six users were online (can't say their names!! NTAOMembers!)
But then I saw something really creepy:
There are 40 "guests" online.
WTF are these people doing? Idly watching us? Are we some sort of spectacle to them?
This is not the first time that I have noticed that there are more lurkers online than members, but it never occurred to me until now how creepy it is.

If you just pop in to scan the forums and not interact, you don't need to log in. If you're scanning the forums from some public or work computer, maybe you don't want to log in. In other words, many guests are members that just haven't bothered to log in. A lot of others are probably going to be members soon, because they landed here through a Google search for a problem they're having. I started out on MacNN that way, and I never bothered to visit the Lounge for a long time-I was just here for the technical stuff.

They're probably looking at the Hot Babes thread.

I think people are too lazy to register. I was one of them. I only registered when it was strictly necessary aka when my Mac died on me.

The scary part is that they may all have the swine flu.
I read on Twitter that you can get it through forum posts. I wonder if you can get it if an infected guest reads your post....

I lurked here for a long time before posting.
I also check macnn from my phone or other computers where I'm not logged in.

I thought "lurking" on forums refers to members who do not commonly post. You know, the ones that say "Fresh Faced Recruit" Even though they signed up in like 2002!

Same for me, I was lurking for a few years before I registered and posted, and I too do not bother logging in when using my iPhone.

I only log in at home. I guess that makes me a "lurker" when I check the forums at work. Me bad.

Yea, the problem is that the iphone doesn't stay logged in and I don't have the patience to retype my password all the time.
It is too bad I didn't register for macnn when bstone (anyone here old enough to remember him?) first introduced me to it. It must have been 1999 or so. I took a year off after high school and didn't register until I was already in college.
