It turns out that cheating is rampant in SETI@Home. Read this article on slashdot:

http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/10/31/034219

Which references this article on ZDNET:

http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/sec...0269509,00.htm

So if you are using your CPU cycles on SETI@Home, you may wish to reconsider.

[ edited the title to be more clear that not all results are bad, just those of some cheaters ]

This was posted on our SETI news page last night.

Please be careful with accusations, nothing has been proven. The SETI@home people would be in the best position to know and talk, and they are not talking so far.

Why would you want to reconsider? People cheating, again, hasn't altered the scientific validity or utility of the work. It *will* mean more work for those validating the data but so what.

It's great to talk about DC projects as competitions but the point is not that some jerk in the Netherlands can get 600kWU's for returning the same WU with many locs. The point is to support the scientific objectives of your favorite DC project with your spare CPU cycles.

Oh, it's proven.

I read that this morning. I've since pulled seti off my machines and will re-consider doing any other DC projects.

It's only some of the WU, and it's just that project.
DF's project head even challenged people to hack, he says it's so secure. If you are worried about security, run that.

SETI has been removing users who are cheating.
Arkham, you might want to change the title a little.

Also, cheating is not rampant.
Since I found out about it, I have been monitoring this team, and I can say with almost 100% certainty that no one is cheating.

I tried to edit the post title, and while it changed the title in the edit screen, it did not rename the posts.

Anyway, there is an update on this here:

http://arstechnica.com/index.html#ne...FllFkucSQkYNHe

Apparently, the SETI folk have said that they will delete cheating accounts if reported by the community, but no software solution will be implemented. they have a new DC app in the works that will hopefully address the cheating issue when it is done.

I tried to change one of my thread titles about a month ago. Same results, the title is changed in the edit page but not in the forum.
