A friend of mine has my old iBook/300/160MB RAM (the original tangerine iBook) which was running OS9, and the built-in 3GB hard drive failed in it recently.

We had to do the 100-screw-removal upgrade process to get it apart, and we put in a fast, new 20GB drive. The upgrade was slow, but we were meticulous and it was a success on the first try.

Afterwards, we put OSX 10.2 on there, and upgraded it immediately to 10.2.3, just to see how it would do.

I was amazed how well it runs. It's a little bit slow launching apps, but the interface is very fast, browsing with Safari is nice and fast, and it really works well. Who says old Apple's can't handle OSX?

I was really impressed.

That's funny. I am one early adopter of os x and I have for the moment booted into os 9.1. I've got currius about how it felt like again. It's nostalgia, but I have to admit I have been very pleased so far with the reunion. Mozilla feels very good under OS 9. Nothing like old IE thank god.
My 384 mb rams started kicking again also.
Ok. Enough brag, but a good feeling is there, considering my iBook start showing a little age.

I've been running OS X on a 300 MHz iBook for at least a year. The only problems I have occur when I get close to filling the 6 GB hard drive.

I think it is interesting that the Clamshells have retained their value so well. I think a lot of people must prefer them to the newer form-factor.

I, for one, did not like the old style iBook. IMHO, it looked like a colored toilet seat. The new one looks more attractive and sleek than the first one.

Arkham_c:: Which model "fast, new" HDD did you put in? An IBM Travelstar? 4200rpm or 5400rpm? I'm curious to know.

Pffffffhhh
I've been running OS X on my clamshell 466 for ages, and am quite happy with it now that I've installed 10.2. Perfectly decent for everything I use it for. Aside from the greater screen real estate on the new iBooks, I don't see any reason why I'd want to upgrade yet. Once they have significantly more than the 300MHz increase over this then I'll consider.
PLUS considering all the nightmare stories about creaking hinges and dead screens, I'm very happy with my tough little Key Lime.

There's a good step by step guide somewhere on the net that explained how to upgrade the HD, do a google search and you'll find it eventually - else someone might still have the address lying around.

the biggest problem with the old 300 mhz ibooks (i have one) is the rage pro card, which doesn't add much oomph to the system.

glad you like how it feels! for me, os9 is the only way to go on that machine.
