I sorted it out. At the same time I installed MenuMeters, I created a folder called "Menu Extras" for all these items. Each time I re-installed, I also installed into this folder. Deleting the space in the folder name and re-installing corrected the problem. I tried de-installing and re-installing twice to verify-If I install your menu extra in a folder with a space in the name, or move it after installing, it no longer works correctly.
Great software, very useful for me as I often force my powerbook to "reduced" mode to minimize heat and battery use-I'd gotten in the habit of just leaving the energy saver control panel open but this is much faster and cleaner.

Like I said, it seems like some permissions issue, because installing a new user fixes the problem. Is there any specific file it accesses to make the change that I might be able to manually adjust the permissions on?

yes there is, one thing that would indicate a permission issue, does it ask for your admin password EVERY time it loads? if it does, i think it fails to set the correct permissions. if this is the case setting the permissions manually wont help.
if it works with another user, only thing i can think of that could cause this problem, is if you keep you're menuextra somewhere, where the path to it would include wierd characters (non ASCII)
for example, since im swedish lets say i name a folder with a swedish name like "Skrp" which means junk, and "install" my menuextra in there, like this:
/Users/joel/Desktop/Skrp/cpuPerformance.menu
this would most likely cause this problem, but i havent tested it, so im not sure, at least try putting the menuextra somewhere, which has a "clean" path.

okay damn that sucks, cant even handle a space, thats weird.
i know i could fix all these problems, and i know how, but im too lazy right now.i should have written most of the file IO stuff using cocoa instead of standard BSD system functions. but when i wrote this i didnt know cocoa well enough.
glad you found the problem tho, now i know what to say if ppl asks why it doesnt work

Not your fault, certainly not the only software to trip over file names with spaces. Bad habit of mine, putting spaces in folder names, just 'looks' better to me when scanning for files. Anyway it works great now and is very useful to me.

it really is my fault though, some serious bugs in there, even though it doesnt support non-ASCII paths, it should support spaces.

Yeah, looks like a good little widget. Can't wait to try.
(Uh-oh ... with dashboard coming out, I might have to watch where I use the term "widget" in the future. )
Good little accessory.

Just downloaded it a couple of minutes ago. Love the idea.
Unfortunately after I decompress the .bz2 file I get a .menu file with no icon that doesn't do anything at all when I open it. I must be overlooking something incredibly simple. Could somebody give me a hand here? Thanks.
