I've decided to remove the brushed metal look from Safari so that it matches with other Aqua windows. It opened the .nib file and removed the texture pretty easily. Unfortunately, the toolbar in the resulting window doesn't have the same appearance as the standard toolbars in other apps such as Mail, NetNewsWire, etc. The stripes appear darker and more pronounced.

Is there any way that I can get the toolbars to match?

Yeah, I tried but all those types of programs do is change the .nib file to not use texture. They don't change the toolbar itself. I was thinking something would have to be done in Interface Builder, but I'm not too sure what.

Any other ideas?

have you tried what is described here: http://www.vk4dx.net/mac/safari_aqua/safari_aqua.html
?

the picture showed there is a clean non-brushed/textured Safari. i just tried this but haven't launched that copy of Safari yet to see if it works...

and while you're at it... why not change your copy of Safari to have Porn Mode?

Is this is in Tiger?
Mail 2.0 has one of the new 'unified' toolbar's (gives it that 'smooth' look) you have to check this option in InterfaceBuilder too (it's about 2 or 3 checkboxes under the 'textured' one, it becomes available when 'textured' is unchecked).

You could try this if you're using Safari 2.0 (Tiger):
