I've got my macbook pro, and I am looking into getting an external LCD to improve productivity, etc. Ideally I think a 19" to 22" LCD would do the job, w. a max price being $275. I've looked at some dells, but the reviews seem to be so-so. I know some Samsungs are good to, but not quite sure which.

Thanks!

Both of those are good choices. I'd add that I'm very happy with my Westinghouse 22", which can be had for $200-250.
A Dell or Samsung 20" is probably the sweet spot for that budget.

22" is the same resolution as 20", so it's mostly a waste.

Dell SP2008WFP looks like a great pick at $217.

I've looked at that too, but I'm not too into the glossy. And I think it would look weird next to my flat macbook pro.

What about this 22" BenQ?

Newegg.com - BenQ FP222WH Black 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen HDMI LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1 - Retail

It has HDMI too, does anyone know if that would work w. an HD Cable Box or a Blu-Ray player? One of the reviews says that it works w. a PS3, so it should work right?

So, I'm interested in something in the 20-24" range, too. How do I find out what a pixel resolution a given Mac will support?

For example my ALBook 15" has a 1280 x 854 screen, and I know it will drive more pixels, but how exactly how many? Choosing "About this Mac" and then "more info" only tells me about screens that are attached (not what size *could* be).

Isn't there some way besides finding original manual? Esp. since I'd like to think about a used Mac Mini as second machine sometimes to drive the second monitor -- but now sure how reliable it would be to read description of a used unit's capabilities. Guidance?

Any non-decrepit Mac will support up to 1920x1200, the typical resolution for displays up to 27" (there are few exceptions, all priced $$$$).

Your MacBook pro supports up to 2560x1600 (30" display res).
