So I've got a macbook whos drive has just hit the fan, clicking up a storm +/-, it's an 80gig Hitachi, machine wasn't dropped, I've taken it out an popped it into an external enclosure and have given it a few swift whacks, got it to come back enough to show up in Disk Utility, then it crapped out before I could try to image it or similar. I think I'm gonna throw the drive in the freezer tonight and see if I can get it to go tomorrow.

It still has AppleCare, but they won't do data recovery as part of that will they? So it'll go in for a new drive tomorrow if possible.

They will replace the drive under AC. But of course data recovery is your problem as both the warranty and AC specifications clearly mention.

If you have a TM backup or a clone it's very simple to get back to where you were once you have the new drive. Use MA to copy back from the TM backup or use Disk Utility to clone back from your clone. Reboot. Done.
