I've got an iMac 800 mhz Power PC G4 iMac (the old table lamp model) that I can no longer get connected to the internet. It was connected via a cheap Linksys router for awhile, but it stopped accessing the internet a few weeks ago. Even when I bypass the router and plug the DSL modem directly into the ethernet port, my modem's ethernet light is blank. When I plug the modem directly into my new(er) 2 GHz Inter Core 2 Duo iMac, the ethernet light is on and everything works perfectly. What's my problem?

What version of OSX are you running?
With the cable plugged in, go into your System Preferences>Network. Are you seeing any information in the various settings? Location should be set to Automatic by default. Make sure Built-in Ethernet is checked under Network Port Configurations.
If everything looks correct in your Network preferences, you might simply have a dead port.

It's running 10.2.8 (I think that's maxed). I fear a dead port. What (if anything) can be done? A buddy mentioned I could try a wireless router. Any suggestions?

You can't use a wireless router without Airport!
Try the usual (reset PRAM, reset PMU). If those don't fix it, all you can really do is get a logic board replacement, which is probably not worth it.

No, you would need to get an original 802.11b airport card.

I think there's some confusion here. You say you have "No Airport" which means that your computer cannot access a wireless network. Wireless networks are created using wireless routers. Apple makes wireless routers like the Airport Express and the Airport Extreme. Other manufacturers make wireless routers as well, like Linksys, Netgear, etc., but they don't call it "Airport". It's still all the same thing. All of them require a wireless access card in your computer to connect to the wireless network created by these routers. For a Mac, you require an "Airport card" as turtle just mentioned. You can only get this card from Apple, thus it also has the "Airport" moniker, but it still uses the wireless networking standard (called 802.11, FYI).
