Went to MSNBC.com this morning. Clicked on the Top Story picture for Hurricane Ike, i.e., http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26724732/
What do i see on my screen?
"Sorry, Microsoft’s HD View is not supported on this computer and browser configuration. The plug-in requires Internet Explorer (6.0, 7.0) or Firefox on Windows XP, Server 2003, or Vista. Please see the technical requirements below."
Doesn't even support firefox on Mac. You can only use Internet Explorer! How does such a mainstream website post things that nobody on the mac platform can view? Who even has explorer on the mac anymore? it hasn't been updated in years!
grrrrrr

Could you fool them with some user agent so e.g. Safari shows as IE for Windows to their eyes?

Well, I tried it with iCab and you can fool them setting the browser as IE for Windows 6 or 7, both let me pass the sorry window…
Before the trick…
After the trick…
I guess you can get the same with Safari and any free add-on aimed to do it so… or you can try iCab, you may like it

It appears to be installing an ActiveX control so tricking it is useless.

Switching the UserAGent does nothing in Safari. I am able to see a download link to get the plugin needed, but it requires that you actually have Internet Explorer installed.
Totally Bogus Amigos.

It requires ActiveX, which is (thankfully) only available as part of Windows.
ActiveX is arguably the single biggest security hole in existence on the Windows platform, and any service that requires it needs to die, and their web developers publicly ridiculed for a few weeks before being unexpectedly shot in the head.
I'm not kidding.

Are you suggesting that i shouldn't be upset? Common, this is a major mainstream website. Millions of people view it each day. Limiting access of certain features to Windows users is ridiculous!
I hate when Microsoft discriminates against Mac users.
It's almost 2009. Soon we'll have a black President. Is it too much to ask that Apple users be equally accepted at websites as well?

Don't indulge M$ with your clicks. Don't buy or use M$ software to whatever extent you can avoid doing so. Monopolistic entities have trouble learning basic lessons. Oh, btw, but you shouldn't be too hopeful concerning your presidential pick.

I almost completely agree with Big Mac on this. MSNBC has LOTS of pictures not in their "HD" format, so don't support their proprietary crap. There are plenty of open formats to do high def visuals in. Don't support Microsoft's attempt to make everything theirs.

How could i support microsoft when i can't even view the pictures?
All i'm saying is that they could have posted those pictures using a different method. Why choose something that only some of your customers can use?

True, but it was unavoidable - it was a business need.

I still can't figure out how Olbermann switched from SportsCenter to THAT.
Check out all the old "This is SportsCenter" commericals at sportscenter.com. Funny stuff.

Has any one looked at the requirements for that plug in
Operating system: Only Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista RC1 or later are supported at this time.
Web browser: IE6, IE7, Firefox 1.5 and Firefox 2.0
Memory: 256 MB of memory is a bare minimum; 1GB recommended.
Disk: This technology preview uses almost no disk space. The ActiveX control is less than 500KB in size, and no local disk storage is used when the code is running.
Graphics: Graphics cards that support DirectX 9. If your card has below 32MB of memory you may only be able to run one instance of HD View. HD View may run on cards that do not meet this requirement, but performance may be poor and functionality may be impaired.
1GB of ram is best, a decent quality video card... good god Mircosoft, LEARN TO CODE BETTER.

No, it's not a joke. Watch them for a change. They always have all viewpoints on when discussing an issue.

Who cares which news station you tune into. How many different spins could different networks possibly put on 'tragedy'. Cause that's all they report on these days.
Who died, who got screwed, who is going to jail. Fraud, deception, lies, scams........
I love the news!
