hi every1

i don't know much at all about computers.i hav MAC OS X 10.4.11

i'm trying to unlock a Ritmo portable hardrive as it is saying its read only

i've been into aapplications/utilities/terminal and typed in cd /Volumes ls -go and this came up: drwxr-xr-x

can sum1 please tell me what this means? i hav no clue whether its only windows compatible or not.and please tell me if and how i can unlock it?

If it's NTFS formatted (the Windows preferred format) then you'll be able to read it but not write to it without additional software.

You'll need tp plug it into a windows machine and reformat it as FAT32/DOS. Then Disc Utility will be able to erase it and reformat as an HFS+ volume.

Of course you'll loose all the data on it (if it has any) so you'll need to get this off (and onto your PC) first.

You could if you were just accessing the drive once in a while but using it mainly in a PC environment, but if it's going to be a mainly Mac drive from now on you should get it changed to HFS+

Um, how about first we Get Info on the drive to make sure what the issue actually is?

In the Finder, click on that drive's icon (on the desktop) to select it, then go to File -> Get Info. Look for the drive format and tell us that. You can also check permissions here.

He's in the terminal. I think we can assume some prior art.

As someone who's done support, I make no such assumptions. In particular, people who are coming from a UNIX/Linux background may often not look at the GUI first.
