(I thought there had already been a thread about this, but a search didn't reveal it. So here goes.)

The holidays approach and my parents have begun to ask what I might like to receive for Christmas. I like to ask for at least one interesting bottle a year, so I throw it open to the well-schooled palates of MacNN: what's a good brand of single malt scotch?

(A note on my tastes: I have some Glenlivet 12 in the cabinet as my "house" scotch; decent for day-to-day enjoyment, but not remarkable. Glenlivet 18, however, is suprisingly good and smooth--almost a different dram altogether. I had some Glenfiddich and didn't care for it. Ditto the Dalmore; not bad, but I wouldn't buy it again. And I don't generally care for the very loamy/earthy stuff.)

Your wisdom and insight is appreciated.

(Oh yeah. Try to keep it <$50 a bottle. )

The best singlemalt you can get - is The Balvenie 10 years.

If you like em smokey and strong i recommend Lagavulin - but i would go for The Balvenie 10 :-)

I only drink blend, so I can't really recommend any single malts, but if you like a good blend there is nothing I have tasted that compares to Johnnie Walker black label. Totally brilliant!
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

If you liked the laphroaig then try out some Ardbeg .
For a big flavour perhaps a Glenmorangie with a port finnish. They also do some real old stuff, I tried some 25year old once.

And a mention must go to my local distillery Bladnoch

I have a friend who manages an Oddbins shop ( sells booze ) and with the tasting samples of shitloads of whisky I have tried many a good malt.
The names somehow seem to escape me, with many of them seemingly called "Tthish is a nisshhh dram"

My "house whisky" would be good old FamousGrouse for those who would drink whisky and coke.

I drink litres of the stuff and I made a big mistake one time - I bought a bottle of Laphroaig - it is either the worst single malt there is or it is the most 'acquired taste' one in the world.

Personally I too like the Balvennie but also enjoy Dalwhinnie and Tamdhu

Do you know how they make the stuff? And what gives each single malt it's special flavour and colour?

bushmills would be the local stuff to try (local to here). The normal stuff is a blend but the aged stuff is single malt and should be right up your alley.

Laphroig.
Lagauvelin (sp?)
Glenmorangie is my personal favorite.
McLellans is really good and at under $20 USD, it's a bargain. Good stuff cheap. Love it.
Loch Dhu for the very adventurous. I love it and it's cool to look at!

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

I prefer single malts, but if you're gonna drink blended then try some Johnnie Walker Blue Label. It makes Black Label taste like cheap swill, and of course it's super expensive. It's nice to try once though.

Dewers, no just kidding. When I worked at the country club, we sold a ton of this

and let me tell you that **** isn't cheap, about 50 bucks a bottle, but we sold it for 12 bucks for 2oz, gotta love food service markup.

We actually had a Scotch tasting and it was unanimous that Oban took the cake.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

Talisker is also very nice.
All opinions are entirely those of my employer. It's not my fault.
