I have two questions to ask, the first being the most important and annoying problem and the second being a minor enquiry.

1. Basically for the past 6-7 months I've been having minor problems with my system preferences, OS X seems to forget what they are and change back to the default settings. It doesn't happen on a daily basis, it just sort of happens every once in a while. It also doesn't happen to all system preferences, only a select few, here's a list of what changes:

- Language changes from UK to USA
- F9 - F12 lose their functions I.E F9 for expose, F12 for dashboard.
- Shortcuts for the dictionary I.E (ctrl + apple + d) doesn't activate the dictionary as it should
- The middle button on my Mighty Mouse neglects to activate Dashboard as it has been set to

I've not noticed anything unusual that could set these problems off, doesn't happen after using a certain program or anything like that, just happens randomly. It's almost as if the system forgets what my preferences are.
So does anyone know how I can fix this, anyone else experienced this?

2. Just a quick question, is there any way to password protect a folder in OS X? If not, does anyone have a work around, or something that will have similar results?

Sorry if these have already been brought up.

Thanks in advance

Ensure you are not running out of disk space. Bad things can happen then.

Create a password protected disk image of the folder you want to keep secret.

What type of Mac do you have?

If it's an older one, it could be the pram battery failing.

768 MB RAM
16/80 GB HDD available
running OS X 10.4.7

Thanks for the responses so far.

You can use an encrypted sparse disk image.
