Hil -- preparing to take the Leopard plunge. Back when it came out, I know the Macfixit site was recommending installing Leopard on an external drive, so you could boot into either if there were troubles.

That kind of seems like a pain. So my question -- did most people archive and install (or even wipe their drive and then install from there), or did people actually do the external HD method?

I'm somehwat relunctant to go through the install pain, even though it sounds like the result will be worth it. I'm particularly leery of network/internet issues. I have an extreme base station -- five years old; works fine -- I'd like everything to stay that way!

Cloned my 10.4 install to an external drive.

Erased internal drive and installed 10.5.

Did an ordinary upgrade from 10.4.11 with no problems, then for a backup I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the new system to an external HD - again with no problems.

I, like maroma, cloned my original 10.4 installation to my external then did a fresh erase and install of 10.5. I thought at the time that I might run into issues and want to revert to 10.4 but I never once needed to and have long since erased my 10.4 backup.
