Since I made the mistake of downloading a shareware version of program called Maximum Basic, a rather crude Basic interpreter w/ compiler, I noticed soon afterward that OS X listed a number of native OS X apps (all Cocoa apps, I believe) as a "Maximum Basic application" instead simply "Application".

This includes OS X's own Address Book, AiPort Setup Assistant (but not AirPort Admin Utility), Calculator, Console, CPU Monitor, Disk Utility (but not Disk Copy), Grab, and many more...

It seems truly random. Maximum Basic has been long deleted from the machine, but the annoying labeling remains.

How on earth can I change this?

And does anyone know where OS X keeps a database of this information -- i.e., who 'owns' the .app file extension?

Thanks...

Brute force approach: in ~/Library/Preferences, delete these files:

LSApplications
LSSchemes
LSClaimedTypes

Unfortunately, this will erase any custom file associations you've made. That'll teach you to use metadata! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Thanks! I'll try this today...

On a side note, do you know if this Maximum Basic's fault? Did it corrupt these files, or was it OS X?

Worked like a charm -- thanks again.

I'll be more cautious about scrappy-looking shareware programs in the future.
