Can't believe I just noticed this. I am admin on our lab's G4, running 10.1.5. When I log into it from my powerbook, I have something resembling root status. I can get into any user's folder. This is not the case when I log in directly on the machine. Whatupwidat?

I assume you mean mounting a volume remotely using AppleShare, rather than logging in remotely.

If so, this is a 'feature'.
